I thought it was about time I wrote an epinion of Nirvana, as it one of my favourite bands, but Kurt Cobain (King of Grunge) along with Krist and Dave, truly demonstrate what good music is all about. It is by far, I think their best album and I will go through each song to demonstrate what a magnificent album it really is.

---------------------------------------

'SERVE THE SERVANTS' -

commences the album with basically an anthem all about the woes of life in which everyone can relate too. It is a great opener, in which it leaves other songs to enter, without being type casted as a certain type of grunge. The music is brilliant with its scatchy guitars and the drums and bass adding depth to the song. The irony of Kurts lyrics, also show nothing is perfect,

'teenage sex has paid off well,
now I'm bored and old.'

This is ony an example but it also is shown throughout the song.

'I tried hard to have a father, but instead I had a dad.'

--------------------------------------

'SCENTLESS APPRENTICE' -

is one of my personal favourite Nirvana songs of all time. The opening of the song is so strong and brash with distortion running through the mmusic and hard hitting drums, with a manic bass. The tune, infiltrates your brain and it is not a bad thing though. Kurts voice is really grainy, giving all the lyrics such edge, that always seem to have this tune, glued to the back of your mind.

----------------------------------------

'HEART SHAPED BOX' -

a song loved by many, and it deserves all the credit it can get. Apparently this song was related to Kurts fill for divorce against Courtney Love, but apparently she denies this happening. However some lyrics oppose this denial with,

'I wish I could eat your cancer,
when you turned black.'

which basically is speculated as a reference to Courtney Love, after their marriage. But it is emotionally extremely moving and the three - chorder plucking makes it so melancholy and moving. The guitar seems more 'tighter' with less distortion and more refinement, givning the atmosphere a more eerie feeling.

----------------------------------------

'RAPE ME'-

this was a double a-side for 'Come as you are ' of the 'Nevermind' album, and it gave fans a wider outlook on Nirvana's talent. However, it DOES NOT refer to being litrelly rape, but Kurt displays his emotions as if he was being 'raped' by the media and scandal, which surrounds one's life once they enter stardom.

' Hate me, do it and do it again,
waste me, rape me my friend.'

It also shows the backstabbing of life by the reference to 'my friend.' The basic riffs of the guitar in this, is simple but effective and gives the song, a simple message of the pain, people have to go through, even though people think its a 'bed of roses' being famous.

-------------------------------------------

'FRANCES FARMER WILL HAVE HER REVENGE ON SEATTLE.' -

although Kurt said that this has no reference to his daughter, Frances Farmer Bean Cobain, it is about a down trodden person, seekeing her come uptance on those hurting her. There is more tighter guitar playing and then interjects an explosion of playing and the chorus demosntrates a deeper playing, with a distorted edge to it.

--------------------------------------------

'DUMB' -

This song is also one of my personal favourites, with amazing lyrics, all about self realisation that drugs are the source of his happiness but depression can be 'amended with this.'

'My heart is broke, can I have some glue,
sitting here, sniff it with you.
We'll float around hang out on clouds,
then we'll come down and have a hangover.'

The cello used in this is really clever as it mixes grunge with a classic insturment giving the song more dimensions and pases the melancholy atmosphere very well.

-----------------------------------------

'VERY APE.'-

although this is a very short song, its quick, simple and effective. The shaky, distored instrument make this song sound primitive but it very addictive musically. Its all about making fun of the egotisticals out there, which Kurt had often mentioned about this song.

'I've been buried into my neck in
contradictionary flies,
im proud to be the king of illiterature.
I'm very ape and very nice.'

------------------------------------------

'MILK IT' -

a warped love song. Kurt described it as a love song, but it is a sort of twisted own, relating partners as 'parasites.' One of my favourtie songs. The quiet beginning explodes with a heavy grunge anthem.

'Look on the bright side suicide,
lost eyesight I'm on your side,
Angel left wing right wide broken wing
lack of iron and not sleeping.'

I couold go on for decades about analysing the lyrics but I just wanted to give an example, of the twisted lyrics, but they resemble hope for each other and how love pulls you through.

-------------------------------------------

'PENNYROYAL TEA' -

is all about abortion. Kurt voice drops and sounds slurred, giving the song, veyr heart felt emotions. The reference to pennyroyal tea, being the abortionate product a sense of pettiness, meaning that people these days take it as just drinking tea, without properley considering how pivitol this drug is in life. The music is powerful in this often bursting out into dominat drums, but giving a solo part for the guitar, demonstraing a complicated tune interweaving it with a much neede bass for this song.

------------------------------------------

'RADIO FRIENDLY UNIT-SHIFTER'-

has an addictive tune, but as well as having a message of self depreciation, it is mocking (with its title) the commercialised songs, such as 'Smells like Teen spirit' which propelled posers into the scene. This is alight hearted song with a mocking edge. Heavy distortion, whihc makes this song difference and the bridge of this song, is powerful with a rapid pace and the dominat drumming is very important in this song.

-------------------------------------------

'TOURETTES'-

is also known as the 'Eagle has Landed', which is obviously refering to the illness of tourettes. Kurts shouting in this song demonstrates this, but it one of those songs that is amazing in concert and live! Storng music and lyrics here.

--------------------------------------------

'ALL APOLOGIES' -

a very sweet song, with 'soft' guitars and drums. This song has Kurts voice very melodic with the music and it interweaves double-entendre meaning with play on words, showing Kurt's perceptions on life and his use of descriptions on aspects of life, seems to relate to everyone listening.

-------------------------------------------

SECRET SONG..........GALLONS OF RUBBING ALCOHOL THROUGH THE STRIP.

this song is quite scatchy, but good. Grainy voices, ditsrted gutiars, rounds off a perfect album!
