The Foo Fighters began in 1995 with some home made recordings of the long haired, ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Ten years on (with a haircut and changes of band members along the way) the band embark on their most ambitious album yet. In Your Honour is a double album, the first featuring catchy, melodic rock songs that the Foo Fighters have become known for and the second featuring acoustic songs. As it was promoted, 'One loud and one not so loud.'
The 'loud' album begins with the track In Your Honour. The fiery guitar, the marching drums and Grohl shouting makes this a great opener for the album as it is full of emotion. The spirit and the strength of the songs are kept high throughout the catch No Way Back and the singles Best of You and DOA.
The problem of their previous album, One by One was that it got much weaker from track five. It seemed as if In Your Honor would suffer the same fate with weaker songs like Hell and The Last Song but track seven, Free Me, brings the album's momentum back. The next track Resolve is a good song and a likely candidate for the next single. The last two songs aren't bad and do their job.
The acoustic album features many well known musical guests including Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Norah Jones and QOTSA's Josh Homme . On the whole the second album is impressive, especially for a band who have not been in this territory apart from one or two songs like For All the Cows. Tracks like Miracle, Cold Day in the Sun and What if I Do? are strong and even the duet with Norah Jones works surprisingly well. Lyrically the most interesting song is the melancholic Friend of a Friend. This song was written by a young Grohl when he first joined Nirvana and had been living with Kurt Cobain for about two weeks. It gives his impressions of his two new band mates especially Cobain.
In Your Honour does not reach the heights of their second album, The Colour and The Shape, but it is a very impressive, consistent album with some very good songs. Despite this, one is left wondering if it might have been even better if it was a single album with the best songs from the acoustic and the rock album.

Advantages: Quite catchy tracks, something for everyone some good guitar riffs etc. Disadvantages: Some tracks not memorable, the mix of track types may make it seem like they lack real direction
