String Band in the late 60's. Live sequences show the band at the height of their powers, casting a spell on the audience with their unique blend of theatrical and musical metaphysics. A sense of magical mystery pervades the film, from the opening ritual naming of instruments through to the final hallucinatory death and rebirth ritual in the fantasy fable The Pirate and the Crystal Ball. We are treated to The Incredible String Band at work and at play, talking about themselves and their music.Originally destined for the BBC's Omnibus arts programme, Be Glad For The Song Has No Ending was never broadcast, but it enjoyed an independent cinema release in Britain and the USA. The film vividly captures their unique qualities, the aura of spirituality that pervaded their music, their early experiments in communal living, their astonishing stylistic diversity.Their influence on the rock music of the psychedelic 60's was profound, and their recordings, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, was best sellers. A 1968 recording, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, was a Top 5 hit, and all subsequent Incredible String Band albums also charted. They filled concert halls on both sides of the Atlantic, headlined festivals, appeared at Woodstock and in Bill Graham's Fillmores East and West and made many converts. The Rolling Stones tried to sign The Incredible String Band to their label, and artists from Judy Collins to Van Morrison covered their songs, which were also praised by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pete Townsend, Tim Buckley, Pet Shop Boys and many more. Now, with each frame cleaned and enhanced, The Incredible String Band - Be Glad For The Song Has No Ending is released. A stunning document of the late 60's zeitgeist.

Advantages: New and different, multiplayer, drums Disadvantages: can be embaressing, no online band world tour
Rock Band is a step in the right direction for any musical gamer. Obviously a move onwards from the Guitar Hero franchise with the inclusion of a drum kit and a microphone. The guitar is practically the same as any of the guitar hero guitars, but with a few tweaks such as the solo buttons which are very difficult to use and aren't really needed. Therefore the guitar isn't really a must have if you already have a guitar hero guitar. However if you don't then get the whole band set as the variety offered by having so many instruments is endless and playing with friends or online is one of the best things about the game. The solo careers are good too with a good tracklist which ranges dramatically and also new downloadable tracks every week in case you get bored of the same tunes over and over again.
The guitar on expert is easier than ...
Advantages: Excellent backing tracks, competent vocals, a couple of strong pop hits Disadvantages: Not much in the way of soul, some dull tracks, all rather dated now
on the radio. What I didn?t realise at the time was they were formed specifically to cash in on the northern soul market that was so popular in the 70s.
The Pearls
The Pearls were two session singers who had been working steadily since the late 1950s in one of the UK?s first girl bands, the Vernon Girls. Lyn Cornell and Ann Simmons then pursued solo careers with some minor success during the sixties, with Cornell reaching number 30 with a cover version of the song ?Never on a Sunday? in 1960 but they found session work and working as backing singers more lucrative after failed solo singles releases.
In 1972 producer Phil Swern decided he wanted to record a cover version of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas? B-side ?Third Finger Left Hand? to cash in on the song?s popularity on the northern soul scene.
At that time there wasn?t much ...
Advantages: A Few Of Good Tracks Disadvantages: Nowhere Near The Same Degree Of Quality As Their Earlier Work
Much has been said of this record in terms of whether or not The Band really wanted to make it, most putting it down as simply a way of getting out of a contract with Capitol, so that The Last Waltz, their grand finale, could be released by Warner Brothers. Thus for most they would assume that this album did not get off to the best of starts and was doomed to linger at the back of their catalogue, and in a sense this is not to far from the truth as it is definitely not their best work, but it still contains a smattering of tracks that I am glad to own a piece of.
The album in truth is made up of a collection of B-sides and outtakes, with a couple of covers and a few new tracks, but this makes for an interesting listen, that far from being entirely cohesive is still a rewarding listen. Even though the lyrics and the instrumentation never ...
