This album takes you on a journey from start to finish and in my opinion is only fully appreciated when listened to in its entirety. The sleeve art is gorgeous, making heavy use of metallic inks and designed by The Designers republic, also responsible for the Wipeout Playstation game covers and team logo design. Eleven tracks of pure synth based electronica.
Track one: Kalpol intro- 3:18
Used as a track in the film 'Pi' by Darren Aronofsky, this is the perfect opening tune, begins with droning synth, introducing electronic background melodies before progressing into a minimal snare based 'beat' This track doesnt really progress into a melody as such but rather serves as a great introduction to what is about to come.
Track two: Bike- 8:00
Probably my favourite track on the album, this is a very relaxing slice of electro, a nice beat with great stereo effects and instruments passing from ear to ear creating a very warm feeling. Has to be heard!
Track three: Aut riche- 6:55
Very slow droning tune, soft computer altered voices whisper and give unknown announcements in the background as the cymbal taps are introduced, slowly gaining volume before progressing into a slow bassy beat with synthesiser melody then becoming apparent. A very nice track.
Track Four: Bronchus 2- 3:33
A rather harsh track when compared to the previous, straight away a heavy yet faded beat is audible, gaining in volume with what sounds like computers answer to animal groaning in the background, not the best track on the album but definitely not a poor one.
Track five: Basscadet- 5:23
The only track from the album to get its own release, this is perhaps the most accessible one of the lot. A nice beat, quiet glitchy taps behind the main melody, and the introduction of a spoken voice that sounds rather like a slightly distorted radio interview quote. This song explores many melodies in its duration and is well worth a listen, the e.p of this track is also a highly recommended purchase.
Track six: Eggshell- 9:02
Glitchy background clicks with bassy synth sounds make for a track which gets me dreaming of flying over low mountains, and then progressing into the clouds, a beautiful melody and a very memorable one for me.
Track seven: Doctrine- 7:48
Not getting off to a particularly great start compared to the rest of the album, this track actually proves to progress into one of the best. bassy synth buzzes occasionally interrupt a beautiful string like melody. The beat is there but without being too heavy, Is also the perfect length.
Track eight: Maetl- 6:32
Containing the heaviest bassiest beat so far on the album this is soon overtaken by a vast array of synths and melodies filling your headphones with beautiful sounds and stereo panning effects (this album by the way, should DEFINITELY be listened to through headphones)
Track nine: Windwind- 11:17
The longest running track on the cd, this one takes the longest to build up, but it is worth the wait (not an unpleasurable wait) tinny sounding drums and high pitched synthesisers perfectly accompany the chosen landscapes of sound created here. Another beautiful tune.
Track ten: Lowride- 7:16
This track begins sounding rather like a mainstream tune, with fairly light but deep bass echoing over a light clapping sound before a really lovely sounding synth melody being introduced, and then (shock horror) a piano. all very nice, until a rather cold soundign synth is introduced over the top which for me ruins the track slightly as it doesnt quite seem to fit. For me the low point of the album, but definitely not offputting to the rest of the album.
Track Eleven: 444- 8:55
The last track (awwwwwww) begins very slowly with quiet melodies remeniscent of Boards of canada. Then introducing a fairly fast beat with many different styles of drum and snare here, though so well layered, none stand out too much against the others. A ery nice finish to an amazing and in parts, beautiful album.
I cannot recommend this enough, and if on hearing the samples of this album, you think it sounds too outdated, listen again, I bought this and hated it, now it has become one of my favourie cd's. Its great for working to, as a graphic designer this proves a massive creative help to me. It gets you thinking!
Advantages: Unique, elegant, dreamlike Disadvantages: Tracks 2 and 10 are flawed
Incunabula was the first album released by Autechre in 1993.
As an interesting side note, Incunabula means "swaddling clothes" in Latin.
Sean Booth and Robert Brown, a.k.a Autechre, are true masters of electronica. Much like Richard Devine, Mira Calix, Datach'i, Venetian Snares and Squarepusher, these guys expand the clichéd genres of I.D.M (Intelligent Dance Music) and electronica in general.
Incunabula is the first of 15 others works by Autechre.
... ...the same musical vision.
Incunabula is like a swaying drum in a Jazz suite; it is vital.
This album is composed of 11 tracks, which amount to a staggering 78 minutes. The cover art was put together by the Designers Republic.
Kalpol Introl is a 3-minute dreamlike foreword to Autechre's creative concept. It is typically progressive; big steamy piston-like sounds hissing in the background with thickset drones humming throughout; unadorned... but ...

Advantages: great old techno Disadvantages: not as experimental as other ae releases
...or labelmate Aphex Twin, but Incunabula still stands out as being both good dancefloor material and equally pleasant listening, and not simply new-age hash with a backbeat. "Kalpol Introl" sets the overall mood for the rest of the record, with a sharp blend of minimal but effective beats and bass combined with a variety of keyboard textures and understated melodies. "Bike" ratchets the pace even more, reliant on crisp drum-machine patterns and careful ... ...on the autobahn. From there Incunabula follows the same general tone; tracks often experiment with ghostly keyboard backing and mostly clinical beats combined with odd, individual touches. Notable examples of this are the quirky organ sounds and vocal fragments on "Autriche" and the warning siren keyboards matched with notably more slamming percussion on "Doctrine." "Basscadet" is the album's undisputed winner at combining avant-garde touches with ...

Advantages: Beautiful and original electronic and ambience! Disadvantages: NONE
I bought this album recently and I really really REALLY enjoyed listening to it.
Previously I had heard it at one of my friends house and didnt really get into it. Couldn't concentrate with all the chat going on.
Later that week my friend played me one track from the album and that just convinced me to run out and get it from HMV.
If you want to experience him for what he does best listen to it on your own or with really quiet people :P
The songs ... ...Electronic and ambient mix very well and you'll understand after you've purchased this baby!
You need to space out to this and it will take you to another world!..
Their musical ability really shows off in this album [His first if im correct] and continues through the other albums produced to this day.
Music that takes you away - Autechre!! ...

Advantages: Extremely good quality elecrronica Disadvantages: May not appeal to all
Autechre, consist of just 2 artists, whom also work under the alternative alias Gescom on the skam record label, this release under the highly successful Warp label is in my opinion the best of Autechre's long playing releases.
I own the whole undeleted Autechre discography and out of them all i find this release the most varied and satisfying, when compared to incunabula which is more synth based and less aggressive, this album may be more appealing to a broader base of music fans. This is by no means mainstream music but shows Autechre's full range of talent. The sleeve design created by by the highly successful Chris Cunningham, responsible for the aphex twin come to daddy video, along with Bjork's 'all is full of love' music video.

Advantages: Original. Intelligent. A specific sound. Disadvantages: Track 10 is a bit dissapointing.
Autechre's textural album.
Amber is Autechre's 4th work; 2nd album.
Sean Booth and Robert Brown released Incunabula back in 1993, a roaring success. This album would attract quite a following. They would then concentrate their sounds and release 2 very singular Eps.
The first of these, Basscadet, featured 5 completely different remixes of their ground-breaking track by the same name. These were so plural in their construction that the whole concept of remixing the same material never got boring. Once again, the duo illustrate their sheer genius.
The second Ep would be a tiny 3-titled oeuvre, acting as a protest against the "British Criminal Justice and Public order act 1994". This particular law had prohibited gatherings of people listening to repetitive music. Autechre would then release two techno-based tracks and a third ...
