opening statement of intent. "The government, the media, or your family?" Welcome to the post-Millennial American rockscape, where every teen has his cross to bear and every band approaches the recording of an album with a whole head of demons to exorcise. And welcome, Papa Roach--not a band that comes to lay waste, more a band that studies the emotionally devastated fall-out once everything's been wasted. Infest is an album very much in the mould of Limp Bizkit's Significant Other--muscular, bruising rap-metal, dysfunctional two-fingers-to-the-world attitude--but where Limp Bizkit's anger manifests in Fred Durst's crotch-clutching braggadio, Papa Roach wear their issues with a sense of empathy. The likes of "Revenge" and "Broken Home" ("I know my mother loves me/ But does my father even care?") are pretty self-explanatory, but on "Last Resort"--a brutally simplistic study of a friend's suicide attempt--Papa Roach's brevity is their undeniable strength. Tell the parents--here's a rock band of positive male role-models, ready to bang the world to rights. --Louis Pattison

Intellectual is never a term that Papa Roach risk having applied to them. Whereas my friend Rixie perhaps could be, but only in a very, very strange fashion (This is the man who when you say (Feeling quite clever) isn’t that a place in the underworld will respond “Which underworld, classical, greek, roman etc…”). Now, during University time I have the honour of living with Rixie so (Along with all the other members of the house) we tend to share our music collections. One fine winters day (In other words, cold and rainy) Rixie came back with this album and popped it on the house hi-fi. I was duly blown away, decent new rock music! However, spending some quality time with the album altered my opinion a bit (Although seeing them on Top of the Pops at number 3 was a bit of a surprise).

After the briefest of attempts at a quiet intro, which is mainly a large gong backwards type sound – Papa Roach give up and just play all their instruments very loud while singer Coby Dick mumbles along at a great pace. Then it’s into the song proper. Wall of noise guitars and energy over talent vocals is the order of the day in the chorus while the verse calms the guitar down to a more funky, muted riff – occasionally mixing in an effect such as wah wah to make it a bit different. It’s a very good song, if you happen to like that sort of thing, which I do, if you follow.
* Last Resort *
This is the one your most likely to know, being the song I saw on Top of the Pops. It’s a cheerful little ditty all about suicide covering similar musical ground to Infest. Sufficiently similar for me not to go through it all again, instead I’ll just say that the song has energy by the bucketful and if you like this sort of music you’ll be quite happy with it.
* Broken Home *
Changing style a bit for the closest thing Papa Roach will be doing to a ballad for a long time, it opens with echoy distorted guitar stabs and mournful actual proper singing from Coby Dick! Soon enough though it’s back to the tried and tested Papa Roach formula but once again the sheer energy of the song carries the story of a parents divorce from a childs perspective through to the end.
* Dead Cell *
Opening up with the normal Papa Roach approach to music, The Dick’s vocals are fairly rappy in the (for me) forgettable verse but the surging guitars in the shouty chorus lift the song a bit. For the first time on the album, Papa Roach’s approach of playing exactly the same thing but well and with lots of energy doesn’t work overly well.
* Between Angels & Insects *
The Dick and his lads are back on form on this track. Starting with a quiet vocal piece before exploding off yet again into the Papa Roach sound. Again, it’s the chorus’s that are the highlight of the song but the overall energetic quality makes the song work.
* Blood Brothers *
Opening with a guitar riff straight from the Iron Maiden school of hairy metal the song flies along at a fair old pace and once again Papa Roach do what they always do, although there are times on this song when it starts getting a bit old. The song still has it’s moments though but the album needs to produce some variety soon.
* Revenge *
Wall of sound guitars with a few wah wah lead parts floating around in the background give the song a bit of a haunting feel. Nice a bit of a change, but it doesn’t last and Roach return to their old ways all to quickly. It’s not like they do a particularly bad take on it but me ears are crying out for something new!
* Snakes *
Yawn… This is all getting a bit dull now. Go on lads, you go shout for a bit – I’m going to the toilet…
* Never Enough *
The break appears to have done me good! Less intense than a lot of the other songs, there’s more melody in the guitars and more proper singing as opposed to I’m-so-angry-shouting. Papa Roach still crank it up for the chorus but that just gives the song a bit more depth (And that’s bound to be the first and last time I use the word depth associated with Papa Roach!). One of the better tracks on the album.
* Binge *
A song about alcoholism and how it effects the people around you, Papa Roach again put a bit more melody into the song and the vocal and the result is similar to Never Enough, one of the better songs on the album.
* Thrown Away*
Oh well – back to old Roach for the last listed track. Does it work? Well, yes – quite well, it has it’s moments of goodness (Greatness would be going a bit far) but it also has a few duller moments. Overall though it’s a pretty good song, one that gets better the further in you listen as Coby Dick starts whispering “I am a mess” repeatedly. However, there is a…
* Hidden Track – “Tight Rope” *
And it’s um, reggae electronica. Not at all what you would be expecting from Papa Roach. Oh sure, the reggae style guitars are distorted. Coby sings (OK, the lyrics are a bit odd from time to time – “glue sniffing cybersluts”?, everything is melodic and the chorus is just fantastic. About a persons battle between good and evil, even the lyrics are great, overlooking the cybersluts that is. Easily the best track on the album, why can’t they make them all this good?
Papa Roach will never change the world or reshape musical boundaries. Infest is the sort of album that you turn up and turn your brain off to. In small doses it probably wouldn’t get dull but an entire albums worth of pretty much the same sort of music does. Perhaps one to record, rather than one to buy.
I got this album around June of this year, from good ol’ Tescos. I was not sure if I should bother getting it; I had never bought anything to do with metal before and didn’t really think it was my thing. However, it was only a tenner, and I was feeling rich, so I chucked it in the trolley.
Having no idea of Roaches background, and having not read any rants against nu-metal, I listened to the album with an open mind. If it were crap, ... ...amazing I would say it was amazing.
Track by track rundown now…
Track One – Infest: Good introduction sets the tone for the rest of the album. It starts with a (literally) monotonous dull tone, which gradually gets louder until it reaches a crescendo. At this point, Papa Roach start playing, and we start with the vocalist telling us his name – ‘My names Coby Dick / Mister Dick if you’re nasty. The track is about Papa ...

Advantages: It being by Papa Roach Disadvantages: the lead singers name 'Coby Dick'
...single to be released, from Infest in the USA and likely to be here as well (3rd here after Between Angels and Insects), Coby Dick tells us in no uncertain terms that he was from a broken home and that he balmes his father for a lot of things because he left them when Coby was a child. This is another depression plagued song that is almost anthem like. Quite superb in it's simplicity, the song builds up the disgust and upset until the end of the ... ...repeatedly which is very effective and brilliant. Great Song!!
Track 4
Dead Cell: This is my favourite song on the album because of the sheer energy of the track. The chorus bursts into a shouting of being anti-social and not being able to control himself. It is full of kick and makes you want to get up and join in. This again ends with the screming of Dead Cell as loud as possible. It is the shortest track on the album. If your ever at a Papa ...

...So, the debut album Infest on what I’m meant to be writing about here. I am sitting here and I know of course every song off by heart. I’ve been to see Papa Roach live, got a poster of them on my wall and as I sit here writing, I wear a Papa-Roach T-shirt. However, I still think this will be a hard opinion to write.
I will go through the tracks one by one, however here is a list of the tracks on the album: -

INFEST This song really does open the album well, as it quite literally starts with a bang! The tune really introduces you to the album well, with strong background guitars as well as a heavy batter of the drums. Lyrics are like “What is wrong with the world today” and it’s about life and how the government, media and your family influence you on a daily basis. Brilliant track!

Advantages: Great Album Disadvantages: Need to like Papa Roach, because all songs are the same style.
Papa Roach are an american band who play heavy metal, and rock music. The Album "Infest" is their first (and only) and that is what I'm going to be talking about.
1) "Infest". This track is a great track and I really like it. It starts with a very quiet buzz and gets louder, then suddenly some heavy chords are played. This song has many different parts which sound different (like Verses, Chorus, Bridge, Introduction, End)
2) "Last Resort". This ... ...the charts first. It starts with Coby Dick (the lead singer) shouting #Cut my life into peices, this is my last resort#. Most of the track has a little twiddly riff on the guitar.
3) "Broken Home". This starts with a wierd beat on one note which goes from speaker to speaker (left-right-left and so on) then Coby sings #Broken home# a few times then some really loud and hard chords are played. That is the chorus. Then it goes back to the verse and ...

...a look 1: Infest (4.08) The song/noise starts quietly then explodes with the singer (Corby Dick) shouting something I can’t make out. He then starts rapping (not very well either). The song itself is about brainwashing. They want to infest your mind with their ideas and thoughts. Its really not very good especially as it’s the title track from the album. It suggests that it’s on its way DOWN!!! 2: Last Resort (3.19) The first papa ... ...It was put in the radio over a year before being released. Strange thing to do but when released it was a big hit both in the popular music charts and the alternative ones. The song is about suicide. Everything building up until you have had the last straw and you just want to die. The music is your typical new metal style. Heavy, good to dance/mosh to and that’s about it. Another unoriginal song. 3: Broken Home (3.41) This is about parents ...

Advantages: High energy Nu-Metal Disadvantages: Little variation
"Infest" came in 2000 as the second album from the Nu-Metal band, Papa Rach. It was their first big label release, which had them spread their Californian sound to a worldwide audience. The group are made up Jacoby Shaddix (also known as Coby Dick), Jerry Horton, Tobin Esperance, Tony Palermo, and David Buckner. Coby, the lead singer, and founder drives the Alternative sound of the group, as the rest provide the general Metal sound, whereas he gives it the twist, which was popular from the late nineties to early on in the 2000s, as he raps as well as doing the normal Rock singing. The Nu-Metal movement was deeper than simply rapping over Metal, and these can all be seen throughout the album as Hip Hop is imlemented into various parts of the record. Limp Bizkit, KoRn and Disturbed are popular acts in this sub-genre too.

Advantages: Impressive riffs and strong vocals Disadvantages: Poor lyrics
Debut albums are a risky business. A bad debut album and you can destroy your career. A good debut album and you can touch the sky. So PapaRoach needed something good for a first album, and they did exactly that.
INFEST is extremely good. The powerful guitar riffs and ear splitting vocals from Coby hit you from the very start, when the album opens to the sound of the self-titled track, before launching into the easily recognisable intro of 'Last Resort'. When the high pitched wail of the guitars throw themselves into the chorus, you know you've bought a winner.
The record drops the pace momentarily after this, before throwing itself back in at the deep end with the heavy metal sound of 'Dead Cell', followed by the ground breaking single 'Between Angels and Insects' (without a doubt the highlight of the album). The remaining ...

Probably the song that made this band so popular I reckon because if I mention the band to some one they will say oh yeah I like their song last resort cool isn't it. Then I will mention another song and they won't have a clue what im on about. It has brilliant lyrics and a groundbreaking rhythm.
