When this album was released in the March of 1992, I personally had never heard of K.D. Lang. All this was about to change with the release of “Constant Craving” as a single from the album I was completely blown away what a performance, I had never heard anything like it before.
On one hand the vocals reminded me of an old torch singer like Peggy Lee or Patsy Cline but on the other hand there was an element in her voice that give me the feel of Elvis or Roy Oribson, this was enough of a reason for me to go and buy the album.
As the album opened with the track “Save me” I held my breath this was heart stopping stuff, as I checked the sleeve notes I saw not only was she a voice to die for but she co-wrote all the tracks, all with her producers Greg Penny and Ben Mink. This track also contained some excellent “Lap Steel Guitar” playing by Greg Leisz, which added for me a haunting feeling of melancholy. All the songs on this album are beautiful but pain soaked love songs, which to me make the best songs, I mean too say what the point of making music without emotion and feelings.
Mr Mink not only co-produced this masterpiece but also did the string arrangements for the whole album; he also played guitar, bass, violin and viola across the 10 tracks that the album contains.
After doing some research on Ms Lang I found out that this album was a departure from her usual style, which was usually a little more country in nature. In recording this collection of songs K.D. has made an album that is totally revealing of herself and her life up to that point, a very intense but highly enjoyable album for anyone who loves music, and these days you can pick up a copy for about a fiver in most record stores e.g. FOPP...
All you aspiring poets here on Ciao; listen and learn! This album is gorgeous in all ways that it could be: The melodies are superb, the arrangements are sumptuous, but more than anything one is left with a sense of the lyrics. Every song included here could quite justifiably be called a poem. Looking through the lyric booklet ? a mini poetry anthology in its own right ? it is made up of wonderful poems even before the music is added, giving a whole new dimension to the words.
This is k.d. lang?s 11th album, her most famous album previously being 1992?s ?Ingenue? featuring her hit single ?Constant Craving?. I have to admit here that this is the only other one of hers that I own, but I?ve long been an admirer of her huge voice and easy, (easy sounding ?enormously difficult technically) open style. I was really lucky a couple of months ...
Personnel includes: K.D. Lang (vocals); Gary Burton (vibraphone). Producers: Greg Penny, Ben Mink, K.D. Lang. K.D. Lang's performance of the song "Miss Chatelaine" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female." After many incarnations and adventurous forays into progressive musical territories, on INGENUE k.d. Lang finally found an artistic persona she was comfortable with: The Chanteuse. k.d. is a vocalist of an unparalleled depth in contemporary music. Adept at phrasing and actual vocalizing, Lang's palette ranges from the subtle to the bold--always on key, on the edge, and in control. INGENUE displays a subdued k.d. Lang; a powerhouse singer who reins in potential histrionics and sings in a full, dynamic voice. Her job here is to sing, and tell the stories she needs to tell. INGENUE coincided with lang making her personal life a public issue, and the songs on the album all reveal an inner turmoil. On "The Mind Of Love," Kathryn Dawn Lang sings "Talking to myself, causing great concern for my health, where is your head Kathryn, where is your head?" Most songs deal with love, whether it has been won ("Still Thrives This Love"), lost ("Season Of Hollow Soul"), in full lust ("Wash Me Clean"), or unspoken (the Joni Mitchell-ish "Outside Myself"). The album isn't all heavy-handed examinations, though; there's the peppy nouveau-cabaret "Miss Chatelaine," and the award-winning track that sums it all up, "Constant Craving." An album to savor, INGENUE presents a mature picture of a woman's world of longing and desire, and k.d. lang expresses it in a clear, powerful, well-defined and well-controlled voice.
