This album is really one of the better albums out there. It sort of stinks as a whole that everybody doesn't love it.
Everybody should try and obtain this CD.
I hope everybody who buys CDs, will please go out and spend their good money on this one.

Advantages: Recognisable tunes Disadvantages: Neither fish nor foul. Best stick to the original
I was prompted to shake the dust off a neglected corner of my record collection by a review posted by Nar recently. "The True Legacy of a Legendary Musical Divorce?" is about the Album "Legacy, a Tributeto Fleetwood Mac's Rumours" - a CD of cover versions of the songs from the classic Mac album 'Rumours' released in 1977. Nar also said that he was '?forever on the look out for new versions and covers of songs by leading artists known and unknown.'. For completeness then, here is one for his collection and maybe one which may have escaped your attention the first time around.
The String Quartet Tribute's declared aim is to concentrate on one well known performer or group at a time and produce classical (instrumental) versions of the songs 'note for note'. Some albums are compendiums of the original's more well known titles; others, as ...
Advantages: The timeless Sexual Healing Disadvantages: None!
The late MarvinGaye remains the most definitive male voices in Soul music. He truly was an utter genius and had such a creative and artistic flair and remains one of the key influences with todays new generation of wannabe Soul/R&B singers.
In October 1982, Marvin released his first (and his last) studio album for CBS Records, after fleeing from Motown Records in a bid, much like Diana Ross' exact reasons for escaping Motown, for wanting to exert total control over his career, an exercise he was most certainly capable of. The album would be the classic, Midnight Love, which though offered no social commentary or made any sort of profound political statement like much of his previous efforts had, it still stands as a compelling, solid production and a last triumph for the unbeatable legend of soul.

All songs written or co-written by Marvin Gaye except "I Want You" (Leon Ware/T-Boy Ross). The late Marvin Gaye's music reflects a dichotomy that he struggled with through most of his life. The son of a preacher, Gaye constantly bounced between sexual and conscientious topics--the headiest results being a one-two punch of WHAT'S GOING ON (1971) and LET'S GET IT ON (1973). The ten artists who contribute to INNER CITY BLUES: THE MUSIC OF MARVIN GAYE pluck the sweetest fruit from the tree that is Gaye's catalog, successfully rummaging through his more innocent '60s period, as well through the heavier themes of injustice he wrote about in the '70s. WHAT'S GOING ON is the main wellspring for this tribute. The collection opens with daughter Nona Gaye wrapping "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" in dreamy keyboard textures, with help from Me'Shell NdegeOcello's funky bass and ex-Revolution member Wendy Melvoin's scintillating wah-wah guitar. Bono's reading of "Save The Children" and Speech's "Like Marvin Gaye Said (What's Going On)" both include samples of Gaye's vocals on the original recordings, making for an interesting mix of old and new. And Sounds Of Blackness' interpretation of "God Is Love/Mercy Mercy Me" gets infused with a sanctity that turns this track into a testimonial, soaked in slick R&B rhythms and cool jazz riffs. Marvin's more sensual side is explored by Boyz II Men, who update "Let's Get It On" with a new-jack vibe and four-part harmonizing. Madonna also taps a similar vein, teaming up with UK trip-hop outfit Massive Attack to delicately reinvent "I Want You" by combining a sparse metallic beat with lush strings. Digable Planets undertake the most ambitious interpretation of a Gaye song by reconstructing "You're The Man" as "Marvin, You're The Man," and breaking it into three movements. Opening with loose spoken words, the song moves into a funky Curtis Mayfield-inspired section, then concludes with a Quiet Storm mood and clever wordplay that make for a singular take on Marvin Gaye's musical vision.

Q (12/95, p.159) - 3 Stars - Good - "Not surprisingly, reverence is the dominant mood on this Gaye-fest...the most enjoyable track is provided by Stevie Wonder who, going it alone, prefers a mood of exuberant celebration..." Entertainment Weekly (10/27/95, p.90) - "...Gaye's grooves [are] swathe[d] in trippy impressionism..." - Rating: B-
