Overview:
There's been a lot of new bangs springing up, producing quality debut albums over the last 2 years. It's almost like every week you are shelling out more and more money to keep your CD rack up to date with the newest quality. Bands such as "The Kaiser Chiefs", "Kasabian", "Hard-Fi" and "The Killers" have released absolutely chart storming albums, and that must put added pressure on newer bands now to try and follow this success and break into the leading group of new bands. The album by a Brighton quartet of early 20 year olds has not only been passed the key to open this door, they have come in shouting and screaming for attention, and got it. The best way I can describe this album is "The summer in a box". It is simply stunning and the variation from track to track is amazing for a band of such youthful and inexperienced lads. There are some occasions in life where an album just sums up a movement or a way of remembering that "you were there". This is one of those albums. It will define the summer in 2006 and you will forever remember the times you embraced it and let it into your life. Admittedly, the lyrics can be a bit basic at times, and there is an exuberance of youth that brings rawness where perhaps refinement is required, but it just works perfectly and makes you want it in your ears even more. Obviously being all aged around the 20 mark, there's not a lot they can recall about in their tracks - similar to the Arctic Monkeys in that respect - and although not as lyrically dazzling as Alex Turner and The Arctic's, they do work well.

Who does it sound like?
With such a variation from track to track its difficult to pin point The Kooks and to pigeon hole them as a band that just "sounds like"....If you got "The Kinks", sprinkled them with a touch of "The Police" style reggae, and threw in a touch of "Red Hot Chilli Peppers" funky rock, and finally a side serving of The Libertines rawness and you can come close to describing them half way. They are just one of those bands you HAVE to hear.

Track by Track:
1. Seaside - Opens with an acoustic - one man and a guitar - ballard. A soft opening that draws you into a false sense of security for what you believe might be coming. Little do you know that it's about to burst into life with the follow up track. But this is a lovely little acoustic number that highlights the very basic way in which some tracks have been put together. It sounds as though they are almost just recording this on an old 8 track in a garage.

2. See The World - "Do you want to see the world, in a different way?" Most certainly we do, and I defy anyone not to be grabbed by the collar and dragged into this song. This song, for me personally, is the stand out track on the album. Its 100 miles an hour and everything is on show. The singer, Luke Pritchard, is at his uncomprehendable best, singing in his distinct tones and winning you over quickly. It's "The Kooks" at full pelt with passion and distortion working hand in hand.

3. Sofa Song - This track may be one you're already aware of with time in the charts and is one of those summer anthems that you can see crowds bouncing too at festivals all over the country this year. Remember "Dodgy"? [Where have they disappeared to?] Well, this has that "Staying Out For The Summer" vibe to it, and makes you just want to sit in a beer garden, supping an ice cold Budweiser and watch the day go by.

4. Eddie's Gun - Similar in stature to the previous track and one that has caused some amusement as its discussing Erectile dysfunction, and with it lasting a hasty 2 minutes it could be claimed it hit the nail right on the head for its intended subject matter.

5. Ooh La - Time for that softer side to shine again, and this upbeat acoustic number is one of those tracks that just gets you involved. If you are not singing the chorus yourself by the 3rd time around then you are a stronger person than I.

6. You Don't Love Me - Foot tapping fantasy. Crunching guitars and high pitched lyrics take you on a rollercoaster ride as Pritchard reveals, "you don't love me the way that I love you". But Luke, you need not worry about it, as we already love you enough by now. The has a certain Libertines feel to it and I'm sure fans of Doherty and his merry men will love this catchy number.

7. She Moves In Her Own Way - An acoustic master class with an electrical over tone, and one that looks like a lost "Dodgy" track, more suited on the album "Free peace sweet" than this one, but it breaks up the rush and allows the listener to gather their breath back after the manic bouncing you will have been doing in the last song.

8. Matchbox - The "Chilli Peppers" funk comes to the front and this is quite possibly the most joyous and bouncy track you'll hear all year. Yet contains the most simple of choruses and one that I doubt caused problems to pen. "All of us, we're going out tonight, We're gonna walk all over your cars, The Kooks are out in the streets, Oh were gonna steal your signs". You may ask how the hell that can be converted into anything that will sound decent, but they pull it off with aplomb and this is one of the best tracks on the album. Some nice melodic harmonies to end and it's another cracker.

9. Naive - Keeping up with the funky vibe the tracks rolls into "Naive" and is one of the most well put together tracks on the album and has a certain mainstream feel to it, and this stands out on a collection of songs so raw and untouched.

10. I Want You Back - Quite surprises you this number as it shows a softer and more melancholic side to the band, but they are able to successfully navigate this and it's a morose lyrics seem to work. Personally for me, it's the album low point, but it's still not a track I would skip past on CD as it gives us that second chance to grab breath after its predecessors.

11. If Only - This has a feel of "The Zutons" about it with its indie guitar rock, 60s influenced pop, and howling lyrics. As a massive fan of "The Zutons" I loved this track and my only disappointment was that it finished too quickly.

12. Jackie Big Tits - Who, and I mean who, writes a song about this? This acoustic number is quite catchy and although the subject matter is very much confusing and original it does slowly grow on you. This wasn't originally one of my favored on the album, but it has over time and now fits in beautifully.

13. Time Awaits - Pritchard does an impression of a street busking soul singer in the deep south of America, but it's not long before fire into an almost psychedelic rock-out. This definitely has "Police" overtones and contains some of my favourite lyrics, but I won't tell you about those, I'll let you find them for yourselves.

14. Got No Love - You don't want it to end, but it has to and with this "Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-esque" slow and moody number it fades out the way it came in; with originality and something you can't quite put your finger on.

Good Points: This is like it should be 5 or 6 different bands one album, and at times you could be forgiven for checking this was not a compilation album of great summer tracks. It's an album where you start of in the rollercoaster waiting for the ride to begin and climbing up just waiting for the ride to kick in and then "Bhammm!"....it grabs you and takes you round so quickly you are gasping for breath, then finally you make your way back into the start off position to disembark. It really is like that, and I would recommend to anyone who loves their music to give it a whirl.

Bad Points: The lyrics are very basic as I mentioned and nothing that will push the boundaries in that respect. A few of the tracks are almost thrown together and maybe a bit more care and attention would have reaped even greater rewards but I think the success of this debut is the absolute rawness of it.

Verdict:
For a band of such youth, this really is a racking debut, and I can pay it no bigger compliment than to say that it's not been out of my CD multi-player for 3 months now. [and that takes some doing]. I've lost count of the amount of people ive recommended this album to and they have said "Oh yeah, I've seen that on the shelves in the charts, but don't really know them"....two weeks later they are saying "Thanks for telling me about that album its brilliant!". The proof is in the pudding, it was released and didn't shake the world as not many people had heard of them, after a couple of single releases and word of mouth its crept up into the top 5 in the charts and hasn't moved for about 3 months now. That says everything you need to know really. A brilliant debut and a feel good band making great summer feel good music.
