I love rock and roll - and by rock and roll I mean drums, guitar, voice. Three simple and basic ingredients
And My God, The Kooks know rock and roll. I'm sure they fit under the auspices of Indie/Alternative/Acoustic etc. etc. But this will always be my Rock n' Roll.
This is another Brit band that is giving a debut to remember. I've heard material from The Arctic Monkeys, The Zutons, Razorlight to name but a few. All of them are good - some of them could become great. But Inside In/ Inside Out by The Kooks stands head and shoulders above them.
These Brighton group have a gift for original songwriting. Some of the tracks will make you nod your head and tap your feet in rhythym, others will make you grab two pens and beat out the accompanying percussion, and yet some others will have you hollering out the words (badly in my case)
I'll be honest, I don't know the band memebrs names (yet!) but I've a feeling it will be only a matter of time before they are well known everywhere. On this evidence alone, this band can cut it. The best track on the album (and one of the best tracks I've heard all year!) is Naive. I challenge you to listen to that a few times and NOT singalong (humming counts as singing!!)
Other stand out tracks are She Moves I Her Own Way - very bouncy and fresh, and Sofa Song - well executed and a good album song.
The album moves along at a good pace with a couple of changes in pace. It builds up a the start, allows for the band to showcase the standout track at No 4 (I thinK) Naive, and then picks the tempo up with She Moves in Her Own Way at No 7 (again, I think).
The album is great, of a goodly length for a debut (around 60 minutes) and has enough tracks - 12.
My only worry is that The Kooks are going to have to do something extraordinary to keep this up. I worried about The Killers with their second album, but they seem to have pulled it off (though the jury is still out). My same fears go here. I really really really like this band and I want to hear more of their music.
Please keep it up lads!

Advantages: Upbeat, tuneful rough garage hippie sound. Some strong songs on the album. Disadvantages: They arent really the sort of band that make massive musical waves, although they are charming.
