I had been a fan of the Kooks for a very long tie before I got their album and wished that I had done so a lot earlier! The album is currently in my bedroom CD player and I always listen to it when I am chilling out or doing homework!!
It is a classy Rock and Pop debut album from an exciting group of youngsters from Brighton. They have a very unique sound and style about them, which for me is crucial for any band. The lead singer's voice is instantly recognisable, as well as the lyrics and guitar riffs. There is a wide variety of songs on the albums, showing that they are capable of producing a range of different styles and textures.
The album was released on the 23rd of January and consists of 14 songs with a running time of just over 40 minutes. The majority of the songs are about 3 minutes in length and are very short and sweet, cutting straight into the core elements of the song.
All of the songs are aimed at a typical teenage audience, and talk about love, romance, growing
up and experiencing life. This makes it ideal for any teenager into guitar rock. The lyrics are very clever and are easy to sing along to. You find yourself humming tunes and singing the lyrics all the time!
Here is a quick review of each song.
1. Seaside (1:39)
The album starts with a very chilled out song, with no drums. It is a nice relaxing start to the album and talks about going to the seaside (obviously!). It is something a little different from the usual Kooks. It's nothing more than an album track, but a good one at that. 7/10
2. See the World (2.38)
If the first song is a bit slow, this one makes up for it. It has a heavy drum beat and guitar and a very catchy chorus that I was singing in the shower this morning! A quality tune, but unfortunately a bit too short! A very good song 9/10
3. Sofa Song (2:13)
Another slower, chilled out song. Gets you nodding your head along. Catchy drum beats and a good guitar solo in the middle. 8/10
4. Eddie's Gun (2:13)
This song is a bit of a grower. At first I didn't like it, but now I do. It has a very strong guitar riff that takes some getting use to. A good short snappy song, 7/10
5. Ooh La (3:28)
Definitely my favourite song on the album. This is a superb song with very good lyrics. Awesome guitar riff and beat that gets you dancing and singing along to it. One of my favourite songs 10/10
6. You Don't Love Me (2:35)
This was the first Kooks song I heard and absolutely loved it. Very similar to 'See the World' because of its heavy drum beats and guitar. Very catchy again, superb. 9/10
7. She Moves in Her Own Way (2:49)
Another slower song on the album, taking about a relationship. Very chilled out, and generally a good bit of music to sing along to. 8/10
8. Matchbox (3:09)
Another upbeat song with heavy drums and yet more classy lyrics. Very catchy chorus again and gets you singing along and tapping the table and your leg. 8/10
9. Naïve (3:23)
Perhaps one of the most famous Kooks songs. Awesome guitar opening and really grabs your attention. Poignant lyrics, and a catchy chorus make a good mix. 9/10
10. I Want You (3:26)
This may not be everyone's cup of tea. It's a bit whiney in places, but I really like the chorus. It has good changes in tempo and is something a bit different. 8/10
11. If Only (2:01)
Another short and sweet Kooks song. Cuts straight into the upbeat tempo, with a good drum beat and lyrics. Another good chorus too. 8/10
12. Jackie Big Tits (2:32)
A song that strongly focuses on the lyrics and tells a story. The instruments take a bit of a backseat here as Luke sings about an interesting topic. 8/10
13. Time Awaits (5:08)
The longest song on the album by a long way. A lot of guitar solo and fade. A good song, but hard to explain in words. Needs to be listened to 8/10
14. Got no Love (3:37)
A slower song to finish. Perhaps my least favourite song on the album and a disappointing end, but it makes you want to put it back to the beginning and listen to it again. 6/10
Overall, the Kooks album Inside In Inside Out is a fantastic album. If you have heard hits such as Naïve and Ooh La and like them, then I would strongly advise you to buy the album as it is jam packed full of other similarly great songs. There is enough variation to keep you interested throughout too!
If you like band such as Razorlight, Hard-Fi, Kasabian, Bloc Party and the Kaiser Chiefs then I you should love the Kooks too!
A superb album! I can't wait till the next one comes out 9/10!
