The Tracks:
1) "Seaside" 1:40 2) "See the World" 2:38 3) "Sofa Song" 2:14 4) "Eddie's Gun" 2:14 5) "Ooh La" 3:30 6) "You Don't Love Me" 2:36 7) "She Moves in Her Own Way" 2:50 8) "Matchbox" 3:11 9) "Naοve" 3:23 10) "I Want You Back" 3:26 11) "If Only" 2:01 12) "Jackie Big Tits" 2:34 13) "Time Awaits" 5:09 14) "Got No Love" 3:40
My personal opinion:
1) (seaside) A short, slow tempo beginning to the album that draws you in with clear, understandable and catchy lyrics. Nothing intense to begin with and soft on the ears with a very acoustic and melodic style.
2) (see the world) Once you've been drawn into the the album with seaside
track the kooks really go for it with their guns all blazing indie-rock style. Very heavy on the guitars in this song, lyrics are less pronounced and this song isn't singable along too but it gets you head nodding and just tapping along. A more upbeat and faster paced song that gives you a taste of what to expect from the rest of the album.
3) (sofa song) This track is somewhere in-between the first two in style. Relatively upbeat, relatively short in length, has a good solid beat about it.
4) (eddies gun) Released as the Kooks first single you will be instantly drawn into the lyrics and that drum and guitar beat combination. Another head-nodding track that is identical in length to the previous song.
5) (ooh la) Slower than the previous songs, really does focus on that guitar beat with interesting lyrics. The chorus is more upbeat and gives the song a more rocky edge. This is one of my favourite tracks, it isn't simple but it isn't overly complicated.
6) (You don't love me) Faster paced with a heavy concentration on the drum beat, lyrics work well in symphony with all the instruments. Occasionally the drums feel a touch overwhelming but this is lyrically a really fun and interesting song. The guitars kick in the right places although can also feel a touch overwhelming towards the end.
7) (She moves in her own way) Starts off with guitars and is accompanied by a good but relatively quiet drum beat along the way. The lyrics are again, as with most of the tracks, the main highlight of the song. The chorus is a real highlight, everything pulls together and none of the instruments of vocals overwhelm eachother.
8) (Matchbox) I really struggle with the introduction to this song. I find it both dull and boring. However it takes precisely one minute to see why this doesn't matter, why in fact it could be a good thing you have just spent a minute being built up for the rest of the song. Suddenly you get a more upbeat song with flawless lyrics and a flawless chorus. This a great song in every respect. My favourite track off of the whole album.
9) (Naive) Undoubtedly the Kook's most famous track from this album, it peaked at Number 5 in the UK singles chart. This song will have you singing along whether you like it or not. It's as simple as that.
10) (I Want You) From here on in the tracks become more melodical and slower tempo'd. I'm not a great fan of this song, it doesn't do anything much for me but the chorus is undeniably pretty good and yet again, lyrically pretty hot too.
11) (If Only) Slightly more up-tempo, I like this, it's not a simple track but there is no overwhelming sound. The track works in harmony. Lyrics do not shine through but they can be easily heard.
12) (Jackie Big Tit's) Another of my favourite tracks. Outstanding lyrics.
13) (Time Awaits) The longest of all the songs, very slow paced, very simple in it's construction, nothing special going on, the beginning of a slow end to the album. I would have much preffered the album going out with a bang but you are built up at the start of the album into some impressive tracks and the last two tracks really slow you back down.
14) (Got No Love) The slowest of all the tracks. Lyrics are fine and really stand out. A calm and smooth close to the album but again, I would have much preferred the album to go out on a bang. The track speeds up and slows down, there are some good parts and some dull parts. An okay finish to the album nonetheless.
Overall review:
For a debut album this is subliminal. For a tenth album this would be outstanding. It really is a must have album. Unique in a variety of ways, the lyrical content of this album is marvellous. Some of the tracks are incredible, the last two tracks are two of my least favourite but even so they are not disappointing - only when compared with some of the previous songs.
I can't really add much more to this review. A must have album. At the £8 or so you will be able to easily find it for nowadays a bargain.
