Inside In/Inside Out by Brighton originated indie-pop band The Kooks was first released in January 2006; it's still getting airtime on the radio here in the UK over two years later. No less than six of the fourteen tracks on the album achieved top forty status as singles in the UK charts; an impressive achievement for any album let alone a debut. It peaked at number two in the UK charts and did almost as well in both Ireland and Belgium as well.
The album opens gently with melancholy "seaside"; it's nothing special and the mild music and agreeable lyrics bear no indication of the funky indie-pop that follows. "See the World" is where The Kooks first grab our attention with their Nirvana-esque slurred lyrics and metallic guitar thrashes. There's nothing overtly special about this track but it's a great slice of indie-metal that leads the album
nicely away from its gentle opener despite being in such stark contrast to it.
"Eddie's Gun" is where we first get a taste of the kind of music that The Kooks do best; fun-filled, heavy duty, indie-pop. The lyrics are what I can only think to describe as "drunken" and the music is an appealing blend of indie, pop and metal all crammed into this fast-paced number. It's the kind of head-banging music rock and indie lovers can enjoy listening to after a few drinks with their friends and an even better track to hear performed live at a concert. It's fun, it's easy and it's heavy-duty all at the same time. A song that evokes such an ambiguous mix of feelings deserves credit for having created something unique.
Half way through the album we come to The Kooks second biggest selling single to date, "She Moves in Her Own Way". It's possibly the cutest piece of metallic indie-pop I've ever heard so it's not surprising it appealed to everyone from teeny-boppers to die-hard AC/DC fans at the time of its release. "She Moves in Her Own Way" beautifully combines intelligent, thoughtful lyrics with a funky, catchy rhythm that really stands out from the crowd. Its highest chart position was only number seven in the UK singles charts but then it was the fifth single to be released from the album meaning a good portion of fans already owned it at the time of its release.
"Matchbox" is similar in structure in "Eddie's Gun" yet with a completely different melody, beat and attitude. It's quite possibly the only time I've ever listened to a pop-rock song and detected a hint of reggae lying underneath! If I didn't know better, I'd suggest certain band members were in fact high at the time of writing this; it really is that peculiar and funky. Yet it's professional, well orchestrated and fluently performed at the same time.
The biggest selling single from the album was "Naïve" which peaked at number five but stayed in the charts for several months. It was penned by lead singer Luke Pritchard when he was just fifteen years of age which is pretty astonishing given the depth the lyrics run to. They're insightful and quaintly charming at the same time. The chorus could easily be dismissed as contrived and even pretentious if coupled with a less professional piece of music but The Kooks have turned it into an all-round well produced track that deserved the success it enjoyed.
Although the overtone of the band's style is most definitely indie-pop, it's fantastic to find so many little style bites included throughout. From metal to punk to rock to pop, there's not a lot these guys missed out. The overall achievement is an album I have thoroughly enjoyed as have so many others. If you like indie, pop, rock or metal music and you're after something a little bit different without being too drastically radical; this just might be an album for you.
