Have You Got The Nerve

Advantages: Good sound
Disadvantages: None

Nerve are undoubtedly the freshest band to come onto the alternative arena in the last couple of years, going from strength to strength, and constantly adding new dimensions to a sound that lives and breeds on the wit, power and energy of its three Glaswegian protagonists. Featuring what the band describes as "rocky punk", which sounds as if Nerve are auditioning for an alternative version of the 'Rocky' film series, their latest mini-album, 'Psycho Poetry', has moved into waters once unchartered, but now familiarised by a sound that blows every listener away. After recently parting with their drummer, Jason, new man Ali has fitted in splendidly, adding an extra dimension to what Jim (Vocal/Lead Guitar), and Pete (Bass) have already achieved. The Punisher

Advantages: It ends.
Disadvantages: Plot, acting, direction, complete lack of originality, unrelentingly dark.

The Punisher, the newest Marvel comics film adaptation appears to leave one with just one simple question after viewing: why did they bother? Already turned into a terrible film in 1989, it seems that this isn't enough for Marvel, and the comic deserves two terrible films. Perhaps that is a little harsh, there are a few good elements that shine through here, but it's nowhere near enough to improve the film to any degree, or make it enjoyable at all. The Punisher is a simple story. Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) has his entire family wiped out by criminals. Left for dead, over time he recovers, and exacts his revenge on each of them, in increasingly brutal and over the top ways. And that's about it really, meaning if you don't get your kicks from overblown fight scenes or massive explosions, you're not going to find all that much ...

Review of The Punisher (DVD)

The Punishment Begins

Advantages: Thomas Jane is a good Punisher
Disadvantages: John Travolta is cack, cack, cacketty cack

Frank Castle is on top of the world. Highly respected at work (he is one of the force's most decorated undercover officers) and adored at home by his wife and son, he decides to retire from the force and enjoy a quieter life with the family. But in his professional life, Castle made enemies. Lots of them. And now one of those enemies decides to avenge the loss of his own son by exacting a terrible act of retribution upon Castle, killing his entire extended family, his wife and his only son before putting a bullet in Castle's head. Castle, however, is not dead. Whilst his heart may be broken and his soul crushed, his body manages to recover. And so The Punisher is born - and the underworld had better watch out. As the onslaught of comic book to movie adaptations continues, some directors are attempting to try and break away from ...
