Middleton, so despite its Winnie The Pooh-esque cover art,Into The Woodsdoesnt disappoint. He may not have fellow Arab Strapper Aiden Moffats characteristic monosyllabic storytelling to deliver lyrics of self-hatred, loneliness or incompetence, but in his own inimitable Scottish burr, the songs are almost as effective; not as dark, but certainly possessing a charm and identity of their own.Kicking off with the amusing "Break My Heart", in which he pleads that hed "rather have you than sing these shit songs", then listing whatll happen if his heart does get broken, over a jaunty backing track that sounds like a ramshackle Belle&Sebastian. The piano and acoustic sound is continued through most of the album, but absent on the album highlight of "No Modest Bear" where the sound is all cheap electronica and "Bear With Me", which is industrial enough to be Depeche Mode.Slightly more accessible and with more of a sing-along factor than your average Arab Strap album, it seems that Middleton has managed to carve out a niche away from his band that proves his all-round talent.--Thom Allott

Advantages: Sondheim music, wit and talent! Disadvantages: Complex storyline?
A huge musical theatre fan I HAD to review this DVD. Original Story written by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim (also a great book), this is really about what happens AFTER 'Happily Ever After'... Filmed at Broadways Martin Beck Theatre.....
Simply the storyline consists of the family favourite fairy tales such as Jack & The Beanstalk, and Cinderalla, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, then blends in a story of a baker and his wife who long for a child.
The Witch who pops into each story is played by the simply wonderful Bernadette Peters, The Prince Charming by Robert Westernberg..
In the first act, the characters set out to achieve their goal of living "Happily Ever After" through familiar routes - Cinderella goes to the Ball and captures the heart of Prince Charming, Jack climbs the Beanstalk and finds a land of Giants ...
Advantages: The controls are great Disadvantages: Graphics are fairly average
Plus costs around £16, but you can actually buy it packaged with this new Tiger Woods game for £46.
Swing Like a Pro!
In the past, doing anything like an authentic golf swing on a Tiger Woods game would result in a horrible hook or slice, which became incredibly frustrating when watching your ball soar into a bunker or a pond nine out of ten times - the addition of MotionPlus means that now you can take your real swing and use it in the game - and believe me, it works. The result is that Tiger Woods '10 is the best and most authentic representation of golf to date, and can be played by anyone from the complete novice to the seasoned pro.
In fact Tiger Woods '10 has included a whole sub-game called 'Disk Golf' to show off the capabilities of MotionPlus. This mode gives you a chance to chuck around a frisbee on any of the courses ...
Advantages: Great songs, great performances, wonderful sets, great story Disadvantages: None
What do you get when you mix Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and other fairy tales? You get a fantastic musical made for Broadway called “Into The Woods”. An interesting tale that weaves and entwines the stories with magic and music. With such acclaimed stage performances by stars such as Bernadette Peters and Robert Westenberg, you get a healthy serving of wonderful singing, light comedy and lessons in life served to you in a two act play.
The first act blends familiar fairy tales with a new story of a baker and his wife who wish more than anything to have a child. However, the baker’s family has a curse on it, laid by the witch who lives next door. Unless they help the witch by collecting the items she needs for a spell, they shall never have a child. Without these items ...

Album Notes
Moody and melancholy from start to finish, INTO THE WOODS, the second LP from Arab Strap member Malcolm Middleton, is reminiscent of Elliot Smith and Leonard Cohen at their best.
Album Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (No. 834, p.143) - "...[T]uneful...Middleton's dark humor, silly puns, ("Bear With Me"), and vibrant arrangements bring some sunlight and warmth to his lager-soaked heart." - Grade: B+ Mojo (p.58) - Ranked #8 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2005" - "[H]is brutish wit was allied to a surprising melodic uplift to produce this modern pop masterpiece." Magnet (p.101) - "Middleton is neither dreary nor seditionary - merely superb....Middleton astutely counterbalances his lyrical gloom with uplifting sonics."
