This album was released in 2001 and I've decided to review it now as it's taken a long time to grow on me. I bought this album on vinyl for £13 in Virgin and I got the CD for only £2 in Music Zone. It wasn't available on cassette, somewhat disappointingly but there were 5 different coloured CD covers available.
If Michael Jackson had repeated his older work entirely he'd get accused of being stuck in a time warp, and if he'd done a wildly different album he could have alienated the fans just for the sake of gaining a different, lesser audience.
The weakest tracks on "Invincible" are "Heaven Can Wait" and "Lost Children," but even those aren't that bad. The title track, "Invincible," doesn't refer to himself, but the lady he loves, and although it's catchy, it's a strange choice of title track. Perhaps "Privacy" would have been more of a personal message. "Privacy" isn't a very good song either and the more malicious amongst you will probably be wondering why exactly he needs his privacy.
"2000 Watts" would surely have been a hit in the clubs had it been released. "Don't Walk Away" is a nice ballad, which may win over people who aren't necessarily Michael Jackson fans.
"Butterflies" could easily be something which was left out of the "Thriller" album. It is a cover of a Floetry song and it's great.
The vocal performances are either average or fantastic but the actual album as a whole doesn't grab you. If this review sounds contradictory, that merely reflects the complexity of the album. It pulls the listener in many directions; too many contributors, too many concepts. Despite that, it's a bit "samey" as well. If you've listened to it at all, you'll know what I mean.
The album is certainly not a huge disappointment, but whatever Jackson does someone will always say it's not a good as his earlier work. The press wouldn't call anyone else a failure for selling 30,000 copies on the first day of release, so why say that to him?
It's quite a good album but wasn't really worth the wait. As I said earlier though, I like it more than I did when I bought it the first time. My favourite tracks are "You Rock My World", "Don't Walk Away", "What Ever Happens" and "Threatened". I think the record company could have backed it more and perhaps another couple of singles could have been released from it. "Cry" was a terrible choice of single.
I would still recommend this album to people as it is still better than work by other artistes and indeed if someone else had recorded this album, I personally think it would have been viewed by the press as being a good effort.
