Ok so this album was panned by critics worldwide, why? because it's MJ of course, unless he's releasing songs the quality of "Billie Jean" or "Beat It" people don't want to know. I want to write a review based on THIS album, not previous ones as other critics do.
Track 1- Unbreakable
Not the best song on the album by far. MJ tries to attract the younger crowd by adding a rap interlude wtih The Notorious BIG but fails due to the repetative beat on the track. The interlude is good and the song is ok but the constant repetative beat in the background means this song is anything but unbreakable. 6/10
Track 2 - Heartbreaker
Better. This is a more mordern sounding beat which anyone who know's there music will instantly link with Rodney "Darkchild" jerkins. Fantastic ending to the song and MJ's vocal's sound fresher than ever. Again not the best on this album but better than unbreakable. 7/10
Track 3 - Invincible
Another up tempo track that tries to hard. This one has a great "You tell em Mike" feel about it but would never be a comercial success due to the lack of melody (think "Dangerous") again the vocals are flawless and you can tell MJ put his all into it, but for
me the best is still yet to come. 7/10
Track 4 - Break Of Dawn
One of the most beautifull songs I have ever heard. A great love song that sadly will never be heard by the world due to the media and radio networks being so against Michael Jackson. I have never heard Michael's voice this intence and it's truley a classic in my opinion. The ending to the song is so moving it almost brings you to tears. Great song. 10/10
Track 5 - Heaven Can Wait
Brandy supplies the backing vocals to this great little song. The combination of MJ and brandy make this one of the best song/s on the album, a dark song with a morbid edge but it's unique sound brings out the best in MJ and again a rousing ending. 8/10
Track 6 - You Rock My World
In many people's opinion this is the best song on the album. The chugging piano throughpout makes this a true floor filler, great vocals and a funky beat means this is by far the best up tempo track on the album, not Billie Jean or Beat It but more of a Smooth Criminal, this won't be remebered as his best work but definatly a classic although the Chris Tucker and MJ into is both cheesy and pointless. 8.5/10
Track 7 - Butterflies
Great song. More of an urban sound than the rest of the album, had this album not been abandoned by sony this probably would have been its biggest commercial hit. Great remix floating around on the net with Eve. This is truly a great song that is both Melodic and smooth. Great vocals. 9/10
Track 8 - Speechless
This is a strange one. Very short in comparison with the rest of the album (3:18) and a accapella finish, great vocals that really send shivers toward the end, this has a gread melody and is truly a pleasant if a bit cheesy track. Not "i just can't stop loving you"but a nice little song. 7.5/10
Track 9 - 2000 Watts
Worst song of the album by a million miles. Jerky awkward beat throughout and does not reflect the year it was released (2001) it's the sort of song you would hear on one of mike's earlier albums (circa 1990) has world like 3D and high speed that are now common place yet MJ seems to think there still kinda new?. Pertentially good for remixes but not my cup of tea. 3/10
Track 10 - You Are My Life
This is a filler. Not brilliant by any means and a bit cheesy, MJ wrote this for his kids and you can tell due to his great vocal performance that he gives his all too. Nice ending as with most of the songs on this album but really just a bland love song that doesnt really go anywhere. 5/10
Track 11 - Privacy
Not many people are aware this was written for Princess Diana after her death. With line such as "Tell me why one of my friend's had to die" and "She was dased and confused" it's a must listen even if the melody and beat are average. Slash features on guitar. Another filler. 5/10
Track 12 - Don't Walk Away
Yawn. Another filler here that does not do this album justice, I honestly believe if MJ had sony's support and they left out the last 4 track this album would have sold nearly as much as thriller. Another bland, dark love song that never seems to end. Not MJ at his best at all. 4/10
Track 13 - Cry
Gospel sounding rousing anthem. Great finish to this song makes the hair's stand up, i'm shocked it diddnt do better in the uk charts (it peaked at 21) not as good as "Earth Song" or "Heal the World" but definatly in the same leauge. Great gospel song. 8/10
Track 14 - The Lost Children
Almost hymm like song that delivers. A interesting song, as a song writer i find new ways of delivering music facinating. This one is hymm like and almost like a nursery rhyme. Children kind of spoil it but would have made a great soundtrack. 7.5/10
Track 15 - Whatever Happens
Best song on the album. This had the potential to be as big as any song that MJ has ever done - really. It's a crime that more people are not aware this song exists, Carlos Santana is perfect as always on the spanish guitar and MJ's voice has never sounded better. A latin flavoured number that would have been a smash at the time (due to the latin culture of the late 90's early 00's), just one word for this song - Perfect. 10/10
Track 16 - Threatened
A poor man's "Thriller". Not brilliant but fairly catchy another one that perhaps should have been pulled from the album of otherwise fantastic material. Fast paced song that has an mid 90's sounding beat. Avearge. 6/10
Summary
Well there's my review. Hope you like it, i'm s big MJ fan and was really dissapointed with sony music on this one, could have been claissic if they left the fillers and garbage out. Songs like "Whatever Happen's" and "Break of Dawn" would have been classics. Go buy this album, it certainly deserves more credit than it got. Peace.
