Advantages: Light, summery music Disadvantages: Can flow over you at times, and feel like background music
This album represents, in part at least, a return to the style of “Ingenue”, lang’s 1996 album, following the flirtation with dance styles (“Just keep me moving”) and the treading water (in my opinion anyway) covers album “Drag”.

This album represents, in part at least, a return to the style of “Ingenue”, lang’s 1996 album, following the flirtation with dance styles (“Just keep me moving”) and the treading water (in my opinion anyway) covers album “Drag”. The first track, “Consequences of falling”, straight away reminds me of “Ingénue”, it has a sensual feel to it, and why not – it is a song about falling love. So musically it’s like “Ingenue”, but the overall the “Invincible Summer” is much optimistic, and the songs are about happier subjects.
There are a couple of reasons for this, she has stated. First, lang has found true love – not the unrequited love that has inspired her in the past. Second, she moved from Vancouver to Los Angeles three years ago, and there is definitely a West Coast summery sound as a result. There are several moments on the album that bring to mind artists like the Mamas and Papas, and the Beach Boys – no bad thing in my book.
There’s also some very lush production, partly down to Damian LeGassick, who was engineer on Madonna’s “Ray of light”. The beginning of the song “Curiosity” even has a fleeting resemblance to a Madonna track. “Summerfling” has a kind of MOR Beach Boy surf sound – when she’s on stage performing this song lang mimes the actions of surfing. “Love’s great ocean” seems to continue the theme. I love this song, and it’s one of my favourite track on the album. The singing style also recalls Roy Orbison, whom she of course sang the duet of his own song “Crying”.
There are times when the album seems more like easy listening than anything else – “Suddenly” has Burt Bacharach style orchestration, and you could probably dance something like the bossanova to it. One of the songs which doesn’t work for me is “It’s happening with you”, which sounds like a take-off a la Austin Powers. There’s too much in the song, as well – the Indian sitar-style solo sounds out of place and overall it’s too messy. My favourite track is “Simple”, with its lovely, hymn-like quality. It has a sparseness and a, well, simplicity, that's just perfect - definitely an example of a song where less is more.
“Invincible Summer” is not my favourite lang album, but it is a strong album (the ‘invincible’ in the title seems highly appropriate), and if you’re at all into easy listening / torch pop, I would recommend it. Or for anyone who wants to be cheered up by the thought of gorgeous hazy summer days…
Advantages: Long luxuriant lyrics Disadvantages: none
The female Elvis strikes again with this melodious and haunting classic. This is a first class works by Ms Lang and rates alongside ‘Ingenue’ almost track for track. I bought this long awaited album the week it came out and never had it off the CD drive for weeks and still listen to it on a regular basis.
Particular favourites are ‘the consequences of falling, ‘extraordinary thing’, ‘simple’ and ‘only ... ...tracks as they all have something of merit and the melancholy typical KD harmonies and haunting vocals come shining through. She has clearly pushed the boundaries on this album, new fans might find some of the moody lyrics a little difficult – but my recommendation is to stick with it for 2-3 listens and you’ll get into the groove.

KD Lang's new album is a rich, melodic feast making good use of her excllent range. On first hearing I found it slightly inaccessible, but after four or five passes, it is addictive, a genuine grower. I started to realise that a couple of these songs have already been in the background for a while. There is nothing here with quite the range of, say, Black Coffee, but what is there makes a more integrated album than before.

Album Notes
Personnel: K.D. Lang (vocals); Abe Laboriel, Jr. (vocals, guitar, bass, drums); David Piltch (guitar, mandolin, whistle, cornet, Moog synthesizer, keyboards, bass); Greg Leisz (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Damian LeGassick (guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin, Smokey Hormel, Jon Stewart (guitar); Ben Mink (violin, viola, keyboards); John Friesen (cello); Gayle Levant (harp); Teddy Borowiecki (accordion, keyboards); Jon Hassell (trumpet). Since abandoning the neo-country sound cultivated on her first three albums, K.D. Lang has spent the new few albums in chanteuse mode, poking around in a playland of sophisticated pop. On 2000's INVINCIBLE SUMMER, the Canadian songbird looks to a quote from Camus for the title and then loosens the reins considerably, putting together a collection of dreamy, Burt Bacharach-flavored songs reflective of her relocation from the Canadian hinterlands to sunny Southern California. Teaming with William Orbit protege Damian leGassick, Lang conjures up 11 tracks soaked in an aura of ambiance. Among the elements lacing these songs are hints of bossa nova ("Suddenly"), quirky pop goosed along by Eurodisco string arrangements ("It's Happening with You") and a swirling mix of Lang's sultry vocals in a homage to Roy Orbison ("Love's Great Ocean"). Throughout all of SUMMER, the thread that ties all these songs together is love, ranging from how uncomplicated it can be (the sparsely arranged "Simple") to the yearning felt for a secret love (the lush "When We Collide"). Best of all is "What Better Said," a sinewy song awash in electronic beeps and beats that finds Lang waiting for a reciprocated declaration of love.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (7/20/00, p.141) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Quick-paced fluff with the retro exactness, and the soul, of a Pottery barn sofa....[Her] lighter musical tack encourages her to retire the galloping self-regard that can cancel the attractiveness of her voice..." Entertainment Weekly (6/23/00, p.102) - "Lang wants to be sunny, flirty, and lighthearted throughout this shimmery CD....[her] music is often as wispy as the commitment she shows her objects of affection." - Rating: B- Mojo (7/00, p.111) - "...Light, upbeat, near as dammit antithetical to her agony-of-love INGENUE, [INVINCIBLE SUMMER] finds her with hands trembling, pulse quickening, running along the beach, luxuriating in love's joys....finding her surrendering to it body and soul." Uncut (8/00, p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Perhaps it's because she sounds like the love child of Patsy Cline and Nat King Cole, but the summers she conjures up are those of long ago..." CMJ (6/26/00, p.33) - "...Reflects her new, care-free attitude, topped with sweeping orchestration and multi-layered vocal harmonies..."
