Advantages: clean, comfortable, good service Disadvantages: No direct flights out to Asia
I have flown repeatedly with Gulf Air out to various places in Asia from India to South East Asia and the far east. These have always required a stop-off in the gulf area of the Middle East, almost always Bahrain which is the airlines hub. The airline has connections from London, Paris and Frankfurt out to Bahrain and from there there are plenty of connections out to Asia and to various places around the Middle East and Islamic countries such as Sudan and Iran. Thus it isn't the best connected airline for those trying to connect from Western Europe as it will almost always require a change over unless Bahrain is the final destination.
The main reason I have flown with Gulf Air is that they have consistently been the cheapest option on offer for flights out to Asia-perhaps because of the required change over. I have flown with them for 3 ...

Advantages: beautifully written, great characters, more about Alexander the Great, historic, romantic Disadvantages: contains violence and abuse
Renault's novels. I have read three of them by now and "The Persian Boy"
is simply the best.
The books put stress on the homosexual relationships Alexander had with his
friend Hephaistion and his servant Bagoas. I quite like that aspect as I find it very

Great's life through the eyes of his lover, Bagoas.
Abducted and gelded as a boy, Bagoas was sold as a courtesan to King Darius
of Persia, but found freedom with Alexander after the Macedon army conquered
his homeland. Taken as an attendant ...
Advantages: Fabulous people, fascinating things to see Disadvantages: Headscarves, awful food, expensive visas
When you announce to friends, family and colleagues that you've just booked a holiday in Iran (an 'Axis of Evil Tour' as they might see it), their responses tend to be fairly predictable. They range from the geographically mistaken 'but isn't there a war there?'(nope, that's Iraq) or 'aren't they fighting with Israel?' (nope, that's Lebanon) to the most predictable of all responses - a look of bemusement and the question "What on earth would you want to do that for?'
So I say to you put aside the thoughts of mad mullahs and the bellicose but oddly attractive (in a Jose Mourinho despotic sort of way) prime minister Ahmedinajad. Try instead to think Persia - the world's first great empire and the land of carpets and fluffy kitties with squashed up faces.
As there's so much I could say about this fabulous country I'm going to enforce ...
