...'Forgiven Not Forgotten' was a fantastic discovery for new Corrs fans on the back of their 1998 UK breakthrough with it's followup 'Talk on Corners'. Though less commercial and harder edged than the second album, it is the Corrs on top form displaying there fantastic combination of pop- rock and celtic melodies. Originally released in 1995, it was a bestseller in their homeland as well as Europe and Asia. The cover and sleeve are basic, with a traditional Irish edge just like thir music. Just incase you aren't familiar with The Corrs, they are three sisters and a brother from Dundalk in the rep. of Ireland. They are Andrea- vocals and whistle, Sharon- violin, Caroline- drums, piano and bodhran, and Jim- guitar and keyboards. The Irish siblings are now well known for their pop tunes interweaving... ...Before we start, a brief introduction to Celtic music. Originally Irish and Scottish (well, the Ireland and Scotland, as well as parts of England, of Celtic times (think William Wallace aka Braveheart)), Celtic music is, generally, not as popular as most other forms of classical-based music. Although there are many instantly recognisable Celtic songs, as well as artists (such as Enya, Celtus, Maire Brennan), people know very little about this beautiful form of music. Most Celtic songs have pipes, fiddles, powerful drumming, with maybe a bit of piano, guitar or even keyboards (like Celtus), as well as the Irish bagpipes and many strings offering sweet chords in the background. ...and the bustle of merchants and visitors from distant lands are not hard to imagine. The forty shades of green of Ireland are the more familiar setting for "The Bonny Swans" and musically it has a more familiar make up. Driven by the usual hand percussion rather than the full kit but formed mainly of a violin and electric guitar that spiral around each other, there is a very Celtic folk feel to this. It seems odd to many people that such glorious music inspirited by the various threads that stem from the Celtic lands, i.e. Western Europe is done so well by someone not born of the place, McKennitt is after all from rural Manitoba, Canada. But the woman in question seems to have lived a very nomadic lifestyle for the last twenty years exploring the Celtic legacy through music and should really be considered a citizen of the global village in a very...
