Irish Box Set - Various Artists

Advantages: Relaxing story telling music with a bit of heart
Disadvantages: Too boring

...OK album, with a nice mix of different artist most of which i have never hear of before. As you can probably tell I'm not usually into this kind of music but being someone always looking to expand my musical horizons, I thought i would give it a go but was not too impressed. Most of the songs featured were not too impressive, many of which sounded very boring and generic for the genre. Track 15, Green Fields of France - Furey & Davey Arthur was probably one of the most impressive tracks on the album; this song featured delicately sung lyrics and an impressive story which i think is based on world war 2. Some of the other tracks were almost up to this standard but were too boring and didn't catch my attention.... Read review

...Their folky-punky sound is very distinctive - traditional Irish folk with influences from the English punk movement (they blend folk, rock, punk and indie for a unique sound that is truly that of the Pogues and the Pogues alone). The box set contains 110 songs. This is more than just a "best of" box set - in fact: this is no "best of" box set - this is the history. It`s made up of demos, live tracks and hard to find stuff (peel sessions, remixes) - all of this an ideal synopsis of their work. All in all this is essential for any Pogues fan, and of course highly recommended for any music fan - especially so if Irish Folk music is your liking. Just buy it ... and enjoy ...... Read review

Advantages: Very inexpensive album set.
Disadvantages: You may already have some of the many tracks.

...This compilation consists of a ten, yes TEN CD boxed set, each CD having 20 tracks all original recordings. At a total cost of £19.95 in most high street record stores that works out at only £2.00 per CD which is pretty good value by my reconning. I actually bought it as I set a lot of quizzes and thought it would be good for music round setting which of couse it is but it actually good to play at parties etc, many of my friends remarking on the good quality and the variety of songs. There is a good range of artistes on the CDs from both sides of the Atlantic. there are many "classic" songs as well as some that you may have forgotten but are pleased to hear again after many years.
