Advantages: moving, different, good for pub sing alongs Disadvantages: not for people already feeling depressed
...I love this album.I love it so much I used to make my Thai lodger listen to it after our weekly bonding pubsessions. She didn't get it! I first heard the title song "Ride On" 18 years in our local music playing pub and have sang this and other songs so often using my guitar and my Christy Moore song book that the book's fallen apart!
Background
Christy was born 1945 in County Kildare (Eire) and was one of the founding members of "Planxty "-an Irish folk band who shared the stage with Donovan in County Galway in the 1970's.He eventually left to set up another band "Moving Hearts" and then went solo.He has an interest in songs which are involved in social or political commentary.I've seen him live twice at the Hexagon in Reading and it was fantastic.I had to drag my husband-ageing grumpy biker-kicking and screaming the first time but he...

Advantages: Brilliant band live, album is also fantastic. Disadvantages: None, in my opinion!
...I discovered this band through Radio 2's folk night, and bought the album off the back of one track: County Down. The female singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh has a gorgeous mellow folk voice, but the instrumental fiddle tracks are of equal merit.
From the first listen, I thoroughly enjoyed this album, with its fantastic Irish pipes and fiddle playing - and while the band are very tight they retain a good-time pub band feel. I was fortunate enough to see them live at Cardiff's St David's Hall, and their performance was great fun.
It's difficult not to tap your feet to the upbeat reels and jigs, and not to be moved by the slower laments and songs. The cover of Fairport Convention's Farewell, Farewell is beautifully done, and another high point of the album.
Accomplished Irish folk from a talented Irish band. Highly recommended....

...Their folky-punky sound is very distinctive - traditional Irish folk with influences from the English punk movement (they blend folk, rock, punk and indie for a unique sound that is truly that of the Pogues and the Pogues alone). The box set contains 110 songs. This is more than just a "best of" box set - in fact: this is no "best of" box set - this is the history. It`s made up of demos, live tracks and hard to find stuff (peel sessions, remixes) - all of this an ideal synopsis of their work. All in all this is essential for any Pogues fan, and of course highly recommended for any music fan - especially so if Irish Folk music is your liking.
Just buy it ... and enjoy ......
