Background:
When it comes to prodigious over-achievers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has to be placed somewhere at the top of the list. Despite his tragically short life from 1756-1791, his musical creativity has assured him of eternal fame as long as human civilisation performs Western classical music.
But when one considers Mozart's background, one can understand where his genius came from. His father Leopold Mozart was a virtuoso violinist whose treatise on violin playing is still a standard read for any aspiring violin student today. It is also worth considering how things might have been different had female instrumentalists been able to pursue a professional career as adults - as his beloved sister Nannerl was no mean keyboard player, but obviously once she became an adult it was not really considered the done thing for her ...
Forward the Foundation - Isaac Asimov
A few facts before this review starts,
This is the Seventh and final book in the foundation series. Understandable really as Isaac Asimov died just 2 weeks after completing the book in April 1992.
It is widely accepted that Asimov regarded Hari Seldon as his alter ego and in this book Hari..... Well you'll have to read it.
The book follows the decline of the Empire and the coming to fruition of Hari Seldons great plans and works. Mixed in are flash back to Haris? earlier days, which are used to fill in many missing parts of Haris? earlier life and some of the crisis moments of the Seldon plan.
You are shown the clash between Hari and Cleon II, Emperor of the known Universe. But more importantly the manoeuvres between Hari and Cleons adviser, Eto Demerzel ...
Advantages: reasonable, good menu Disadvantages: can be hard to find a table at lunchtime
Apologies for the duff title, but what can one say...
Café Blau Stern is located just on the corner by Nußdorfer Straße Underground station (U6) and on the 37/38 tram routes (they run into the University area and out to Grinzing - a great place for going for an afternoon out of town). Being in a studenty part of town it is very busy during term time, and it can be hard to get a table at about 1pm. Its proximity to Vienna's Wirtschaftsuniversität (WU), whose students are traditionally regarded as very snooty and pretentious, although with plenty of money, makes Blaustern a place to be seen for some, although in summer it can be very pleasant for a change of scene, before heading off for a spot of shopping in the Millennium City shopping complex.
