It seems as though in this fourth album the rage that has been burning away inside Korn has started turning, as it always does, into dispair.
The songs have shifted from fast and powerful, wit strong and riotous lyrics, to a more thoughtful and deep level. There is less of the amp wrecking guitars and violent screaming, and more melodic, almost relaxing guitar riffs, with quiet eerie words painting a picture of anger, sorrow, self-loathing, and so many other deep emotions.
There are still many parts where the Korn’s raw power boils to the surface, Make Me Bad has to be one of my favourite songs of all time, it has the strong and aggressive guitars playing to an almost beautiful tune, and it still has the "make you want to dance like an angry pogo-stick" effect.
For fans of super-moshathonery (mega-heavy-music) this might not have the same appeal as Korn’s previous outings, this is almost a more mature Korn, older and wiser… they have grown up, and grown darker.
I am not sure if I prefer this newer sound to the other Korn produce, it is like the eternal question, "do I like RaTM’s first, second, or third album the most?" They are both different sounds, and both equally excellent, as the message behind them is mostly unchanged.
I definitely love the lighter, or is it darker music. It is chilling music, due to the amount of emotion channelled into the words, and it seems to send you off into a spooky state of relaxation, that other such music destroys with its hard-line anger. It is deep and tormented, full of feelings.
If you buy this knowing it isn’t run-of-the-mill heavy moshing music, you won’t be disappointed.
