The press saw another self-destructive rock 'n' roller in the making and hounded him about his drug habit. This album, however, is a delight and has the same feel as a Big Star record, or the rolling melody of the early Byrds, but much more sloppy and loose. Dando is a fine songwriter and the first 12 songs on this record feel like one great track. part of this album: a rocking version of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs Robinson" (later to turn up on Wayne's World 2) which does, to be fair, seem a bit out of place on the best album the band have written. So let's ignore it and concentrate on the other twelve tracks of comparatively gentle (next to what other bands were up to at the time) melodies have to offer. Well, it's rather a lot actually. Dando's softly bewildered vocals seem to float over understated but perfect pop tunes like the sad little title track and "Rudderless," while "Bit Part" is adorably yearning, and about as unresistable as an Andrex puppy. Never underestimate the quiet boys. --Emma Johnston

...press all the right buttons it's a little surprising that the Lemonheads haven't achieved more success. Here is a band with a singer who is easy on the eye, possess cheery tunes aplenty and purport to moral values that don't require a parental warning. 'It's A Shame About Ray' was their first album to tweak any interest outside of their native America and offers a glowing account of their potential. Evan Dando is the Gram Parsons adoring singer who ... ...than 120 seconds long but it's feverish makeup will blast a hole in your shirt. It all sounds like the band had purposely thrown their instruments into a washing machine in the hope that something melodic would eventually come out in the wash. Thankfully the experiment pays off handsomely with the result that 'Alison's Starting To Happen' is bold, daz-zling and a-riel treat. ...enough version, Evan Dando is a strong songwriter and his compostitions easily hold their own.
If there is one criticism about songs such as Confetti, Bit Part, and Hannah & Gabi, it's that they're over all too quickly. If you're a fan of grunge/country rock, I'd highly recommend this LP. ...

Perfect poppy rock Review ofIt's A Shame About Ray - Lemonheads (The)by

Advantages: Wonderful US guitar pop Disadvantages: Mrs Robinson cover
As part of the all conquering axis of bands from Mass. the Lemonheads gave us all perfect melodic rock. Although I initially prefered Buffalo Tom - the "Luka" cover helped Evan overtake the competition.
The middle to later cds gave us the indie king and queen of our hearts - with Evan & Ms Hatfield the perfect couple.
Let me admit that I still bug my net friends with quotes from classic lines from "Ray" & "Bit Part".

...hit singles suck as Confetti, It's a shame about Ray (released twice) and the cover of Mrs. Robinson - the track that really broke them through. Evan Dando acheived God status and became the darling of the music press where he could do no wrong.
This is a superb album and right from the opening riff on Rockin Stroll does never once fauter.
