I bought this album on a double LP when it was first relased back in the 70's. In fact, we were lucky in the UK, as it wasn't released in the US until many years later.

first "family" of punk. Together more than 20 years the Ramones inspired legions of followers as they refined their signature garage-flavored ear-shattering pop-skewed sound with a string of now-classic loud-and-fast punk rock records and 2 263 concerts. Rhino sends you back to rock rock rock 'n' roll high school with a double-DVD that captures the essence of the Ramones' legendary racket with more than four hours of rare and unreleased performances. More than four years in the making Tommy Ramone served as music supervisor for this collection. Arranged chronologically over two DVDs It's Alive 1974 - 1996 relives some of the band's best performances with live footage of more than 100 songs including "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker " "Blitzkrieg Bop " "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue " "Beat On The Brat" and "I Wanna Be Sedated." The DVD also includes previously unreleased footage filmed on New Year's Eve in 1977 during the band's incendiary performance at The Rainbow Theatre in London. The entire concert was released in 1979 as the It's Alive album considered one of the best live records ever. The DVD features 14 songs in 5.1 Surround Sound taken from the show including "Pinhead " "We're A Happy Family " and "Havana Affair." Nine performances recorded in 1982 at the US Festival in San Bernardino CA are also featured here in 5.1 Surround Sound. The band fires off hit after hit blazing through "The KKK Took My Baby Away " "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment " and "Rock 'n' Roll High School." During the show the band also covers "Chinese Rocks " a song Dee Dee wrote which was recorded by Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers. Spanning the Ramones' entire career the DVD follows the band from its earliest performances at CBGB to their last international performance in Argentina. It's Alive 1974-1996 travels around the world with the Ramones capturing priceless performances in the U.K. Germany Sweden Spain Argentina Finland Italy and the U.S. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 the band may be gone but their sound and influence are indestructible.

I bought this album on a double LP when it was first relased back in the 70's. In fact, we were lucky in the UK, as it wasn't released in the US until many years later.
It is a live recording of a gig by the greatest punk rock band of all time, "Da Brudders" - the Ramones. It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London on 31.12.77 (exactly 28 years ago to the day as I write this edit!) and contains all of their greatest tracks from their previous albums, "Ramones", "Leave Home" and "Rockey to Russia". It also showcases the marvellous metronomic drumming of their original drummer Tommy Ramone.
As with most Ramones albums, you get incredible value for money with an astonishing 28 tracks blasted out by the classic line-up of Joey, Johnny, Dee-Dee and Tommy. The first three of whom are sadly no longer with us. All of the classics are included, such as "Beat on the Brat", "Blitzkrieg Bop" (from which the legendary "Hey Ho, Let's Go" chant derives), "Rockaway Beach" and Sheena is a Headbanger". But it's the sheer quality of the recording that is so amazing. There are dozens of Ramones live bootlegs to be had these days but none come even close to the superb sound quality on this album. The Ramones made 4 great albums (their first 3 (above) plus "Road to Ruin" but if you want the perfect introduction to the band that deservedly took up their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is surely it.
This is, without doubt, a must-have album which I now have on a single CD - my original Ramones vinyl albums are up in my loft - I've no turntable to play them on anymore.......
If you like your punk rock fast, manic and played by a band who were always the tightest and most well-rehearsed on stage, go and buy this. It'll be for sale in the bargain bins in your local HMV or Virgin, or you can pick it up for a song on Ebay. It should be in any and every punk rockers collection.....
Advantages: Non-stop energetic over the top hour of brilliance Disadvantages: Everything sounds the same if you're not a fan
A tragically ironic name considering the majority of the original band have since passed.
Anyway, this cd is an hour long bust of energy that does not let you go. Although their songs may lack originality after a while they are each brilliant on their own. For all you Punks that think greenday was the real thing (or even people believing the sex pistols to have started it all) the Ramones were punk before it even existed. Their limitless energy, over the top performance and trashy 3 chord 4/4 rock amount to one of the original punk / rock and roll bands.
For fans there are all the favourites, Blitzkrieg bop, Judy is a punk, Rockaway beach, Sheena is a punk rocker etc played live and furiously. The Ramones are a band that is definitely at its best when playing live.
Originaliy - both Groundbreaking and Completely unoriginal ...
Advantages: The best album in the world ever Disadvantages: You must be joking
I put this op under the Gt Hits Live originally .. This is where it should be. It's slightly marred by the fact that Joey Ramone passed away recently. However I'm sure that Joey is rockin on in heaven.
If Ramones songs can be equated to smarties (you can never have just one) , and albums by logical extension therefore equated to a tube of smarties, this is one of those huge tubes that you get at Christmas. This outguns their studio albums and their compilations. It's got 28 tracks , the longest of which clock in at a mammoth two minutes and forty seconds (now I know what Charles Edward Berry was on about when he wrote "Roll Over Beethoven").
All Ramones songs start with One-Two-Three-Four then into buzzsaw guitar driven 4/4 rock'n'roll, and this is over an hour of it. Can you overdose on perfection?
If I had to have one desert ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of It's Alive - Ramones
Advantages: The Ramones first album... Perfect Punk Pop Disadvantages: Short
This album lasts about 30 minutes and came out around late 1975. There's fourteen tracks all clocking around two minutes or less. It's a historic album coz it's their debut, and in todays CD orientated socuiety , "It's Alive" may be a better purchase, being longer , live and Ramones.
It opens with "Blitzkrieg Bop", which was a single, minimal chords and lyrics and lots of repetition and no guitar solos ,just bits where the Joey the singer doesn't sing.
It also contains the complete story of Troilus and Cressida (or substitute any other pair of lovers names there) in two minutes in the sublime "I don't wanna walk around with you".
Titles like "Judy is a Punk","Beat on the Brat (with a baseball bat)", make this a superb album. They're a wonderfully funny cartoon rock'nroll band.
Someone once described Ramones tunes as like ...
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Tommy Ramone (drums). Recorded live at the Rainbow Theatre, London, England on December 31, 1977. This is the Holy Grail of live concert recordings. Long unavailable in the U.S., IT'S ALIVE captures the Ramones in peak form, having the time of their lives before an appreciative British audience. From Joey's slow drawl "Weeeeeeellllll, it's great to be back here in...") to Dee Dee's "1-2-3-4," this disc pummels the listener into submission with the complete live Ramones experience to the point where you can practically feel the sweat. All the classics from the first three albums are executed with an enthusiasm the Ramones rarely mustered years down the line. The live version of "Blitzkrieg Bop" will send shivers down even the hardiest Coney Island strongman's spine, and "We're a Happy Family," "Teenage Lobotomy," and "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" express what it is to be young and dumb better than a thousand John Hughes films ever could. IT'S ALIVE is the next best thing to actually seeing the Ramones live and, as that's not likely to happen, this set will go a long way towards satisfying your Ramones fix.
