I bought this album on a double LP when it was first relased back in the 70's. In fact, we were lucky in the UK, as it wasn't released in the US until many years later.
It is a live recording of a gig by the greatest punk rock band of all time, "Da Brudders" - the Ramones. It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London on 31.12.77 (exactly 28 years ago to the day as I write this edit!) and contains all of their greatest tracks from their previous albums, "Ramones", "Leave Home" and "Rockey to Russia". It also showcases the marvellous metronomic drumming of their original drummer Tommy Ramone.
As with most Ramones albums, you get incredible value for money with an astonishing 28 tracks blasted out by the classic line-up of Joey, Johnny, Dee-Dee and Tommy. The first three of whom are sadly no longer with us. All of the classics are included, such as "Beat on the Brat", "Blitzkrieg Bop" (from which the legendary "Hey Ho, Let's Go" chant derives), "Rockaway Beach" and Sheena is a Headbanger". But it's the sheer quality of the recording that is so amazing. There are dozens of Ramones live bootlegs to be had these days but none come even close to the superb sound quality on this album. The full track listing is as follows:-
1. Rockaway Beach 2. Teenage Lobotomy 3. Blitzkrieg Bop 4. I Wanna Be Well 5. Glad To See You Go 6. Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment 7. You're Gonna Kill That Girl 8. I Don't Care 9. Sheena Is A Punk Rocker 10. Havana Affair 11. Commando 12. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow 13. Surfin' Bird 14. Cretin Hop 15. Listen To My Heart 16. California Sun 17. I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You 18. Pinhead 19. Do You Wanna Dance? 20. Chainsaw 21. Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World 22. I Wanna Be A Good Boy 23. Judy Is A Punk 24. Suzy Is A Headbanger 25. Let's Dance 26. Oh, Oh I Love Her So 27. Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue 28. We're A Happy Family
The Ramones made 4 great albums (their first 3 (above) plus "Road to Ruin" but if you want the perfect introduction to the band that deservedly took up their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is surely it.
This is, without doubt, a must-have album which I now have on a single CD - my original Ramones vinyl albums are up in my loft - I've no turntable to play them on anymore.......
If you like your punk rock fast, manic and played by a band who were always the tightest and most well-rehearsed on stage, go and buy this. It'll be for sale in the bargain bins in your local HMV or Virgin, or you can pick it up for a song on Ebay. It should be in any and every punk rockers collection.....
