Advantages: Hillariously funny, plenty of extras Disadvantages: None
Ever since seeing this film at the cinema I have eargerly awaited its release on DVD. It is now released and I bought a copy immediately it was available. This is one hell of a funny film.
If you haven't seen Kevin before then where have you been? The character of Kevin was created by comedian Harry Enfield and he is the 'typical' teenage child, bolshy, rude, arrogant, argumentative and with a great big chip on his shoulder.
I don't wish to spoil the enjoyment of those who have not yet seen this film so I will do my best to give you sufficient an overview to know what you are letting yourselves in for.
This film is all about Kevin (Harry Enfield) & his friend Perry (Kathy Burke) on their holiday with Kevin's parents. The 2 boys are desperate to 'get laid' and have a good time. Overrun by their hormones these two teenagers seek ...
Basically this is an extended version of a Harry Enfield sketch, but surprisingly it works rather well. OK, so itsnot going to be to everyones taste, but overall I thought it was very funny.
The storyline is simple. Kevin and Perry(played by Harry Enfield and the truly excellent Kathy Burke) are two teenage virgins who go on holiday to Ibiza looking for a sh*g. This is the cue for lots of lavatorial humour mainly involving erection gags(maybe i should rephrase that) and such like - you know the thing.
There is some great observational comedy here as the world of being a teenager and clubland mentality are hilariously spoofed. Perhaps one for the teenagers, or for those who can remember when they once were fondly. ...
Advantages: Funny, Good Story, Good Music Disadvantages: Doesn't show the success of Madchester in the UK
having Wilson give direct addresses to the audience. This is all intercut with Wilson's dayjob as a local TV reporter complete with pointless news items such as a dwarf who cleans elephants.
Winterbottom shoots the film in Digital Video and it works, there wasn't a time when I actually noticed I was watching something not shot on film. That's because the story holds your attention all the way through and juggles characters equally. My only negative point would be that the film doesn't really sell how big the music scene had become across the country and in the press etc. The Factory decline is spectacular but perhaps more so if you saw the amount of money that could have been made if things were actually run in a proper way.
This is a film I'd definitely reccomend watching or even buying on DVD as there's some great bonus stuff ...
