I've been a fan of Anne Cassidy's work since I first started reading her books from the Point Crime series. So when I saw this in the library I picked it up and stuck it to the top of my very long, need to finish soon 'to read' pile.
The DeadHouse is about Lauren, ten years ago her mother and baby sister were killed by her father. She is now seventeen years old and has just recently moved back to London, now living a short distance away from her childhood home and her father has spent the last ten years in prison, but when new evidence appears that could prove his innocence. Faced with the startling fact that he could receive a not guilty verdict ...
Advantages: Fun shooter for the Wii, makes good use of the innovative control system Disadvantages: Highly offensive language, control system slightly limited
House of the Dead: Overkill is the next instalment in, or rather a prequel to, the House of the Dead games franchise. Anybody floating around the 30 mark will know the series from the arcades of their youth (not that we're not still young, of course!). For those not in the know, it's a zombie themed rail shooter (i.e. you point and shoot and the computer moves your character for you. Think 'Time Crisis.')
I'll write this review by expanding upon the 'specific criteria' sections and justify my ratings, with a few extra comments that don't quite fit anywhere else at the end.
Gameplay / Playability
This game is great straight out of the box. The grindhouse/exploitation theme (anyone who knows Robert Rodriguez or Quentin Tarantino's film style will be familiar with this) is immediately noticeable from the highly stylist intro ...
Advantages: Unique graphical style, Catchy soundtrack, Fun to play. Disadvantages: Will offend some, 3-4 player action poor.
The House of the Dead: Overkill?now?where to start? Everything about this game is based on the grindhouse style of film, so I believe that this must be fully explained prior to anything else. The grindhouse style of film is a strange one, very low film quality and over the top subject matter, be it explicit sexual innuendoes, gratuitous swearing and unreal amounts of blood and gore. Very much b-movie material, those who have seen Rodriguez and Tarantino?s double feature film Grindhouse will know what to expect. The 18 rating is well and truly earned here, noticeably the large amount of swearing in game, mostly from one of the main characters, Detective Washington. (It entered the Guinness World Records for the amount of swearing in a videogame, with the f-word being used 189 times in the three hours if dialogue, roughly 3% of all spoken ...
