Advantages: Stress free travelling, comprehensive, clear instructions, cheap Disadvantages: Some very minor glitches in confusing bends with turns
I recently reviewed the TomTom one, which we bought with the Western Europemaps, and I have been waiting to put Jane (our name, after the voice) through her paces in rural France.
As with all TomTom maps, easy to see, easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to update.
Absolutely fantastic, I have no idea how we ever coped without her/it. From getting off the ferry, the map/navigation was spot on, good clear instructions, in plenty of time, and the first time I have ever got through Paris without a hitch.
To give you an idea of how good, we bought a local map of where we were going on the Limousin/Perigord borders, that did not have the town we were staying in (I call it a town loosely) as it was so small, no problem for TomTom, straight there, which was welcome after 7 hours of driving.
We spent two weeks in the area ...
Advantages: Ease of use and price Disadvantages: None
Having used a Tom Tom Go 700 for a number of years, I decided to update the maps of Western Europe. Tom Tom uses software called Tom Tom Home which is used to download the updated maps. Having connected Tom Tom Go 700 to my PC, via a USB cable, it was a simple matter of clicling on the relevant icon on the Home Software, paying for the maps, and downloading them over the internet.
Payment was straight forward. It is undertaken electronically either by credit or debit card, and the down load commenced.
Because of the size of the map file, it took a little time to download (I do have broadband running at 8mb band width, so I suppose a lesser bandwith will take longer.
Use of the system is simplicity itself. You are given a choice of country, and then you select address, or point of interest. ...
Advantages: Good krautrock influenced new wave Disadvantages: Some short and silly tracks
artistic, alternative side to them more similar to Wire or PIL - Harmony in Your Bathroom, Gunboats and Blam!!! are good examples of this particular style.
A downside is that they have a few experimental tracks that are just a bit too short and don't really materialise - laughter and the like - tracks like Turn Me on Dead Man or Shoot The Angels but despite a few let downs The SwellMaps intrigue me and I'm definitely intending to check out their later LP JanefromOccupiedEurope. ...

Album Notes
While the Swell Maps early singles and debut full-length were brimming with the primitive energy of punk rock, by the release of 1980's JANE FROM OCCUPIED EUROPE, the band was punk more in terms of ideology and a sense of artistic possibility than of a purely musical sound. Representing very much that which came after punk, hence their often being labeled a "post-punk" band, the Swell Maps are all over the place stylistically here. Songs such as "Border Country," "Cake Shop," and "Secret Island" utilize a familiar guitar rock base, and "Collision With a Frogman" even rides out a swanky surf-guitar lick, yet the band's experimental tendencies are more fully integrated into the overall song structures of OCCUPIED EUROPE. That said, the album also has a number of purely outre moments as well, as on the proto-industrial scrape of "Big Maze in the Desert" or the noise pastiche "Mining Villages." The Swell Maps called it quits after this album with founding siblings Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks going on to various projects, and though their run together was brief, they left behind an exhilarating legacy of DIY expressionism, with JANE FROM OCCUPIED EUROPE being arguably the quintessential document.
