blockbuster, Control, an album about personal liberation, romantic longing, and, of all things, sexual responsibility. After two albums of middling dance-pop that were comfortably in the Jackson family mold, Janet dropped in on the burgeoning Minneapolis funk factory of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and came up with five top 10 hits, including the opening triad of "Control," "Nasty," and "What Have You Done for Me Lately," as well as the yearning "When I Think of You" and "Let's Wait Awhile," that rare song (considering some of Janet's hits to come) about not having sex. In its own way, Control is the most convincing declaration of artistic independence since Stevie Wonder's "Music of My Mind." --Daniel Durchholz

Lewis, Janet Jackson delivers what is easily her finest record since Rhythm Nation--and arguably her best ever. Highlights include jams like "You" and "Got 'Til It's Gone", which recontextualises samples from War and Joni Mitchell, respectively; the funky memorial to a dear departed, "Together Again"; and a slinky cover of Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night". Best of all, though, is "What About." An accusatory throw-down for a lover who beats and cheats even as he professes his love, it swings angrily between tender quiet and raging bitter funk. --David Cantwell

Advantages: funky and full of great tracks Disadvantages: tons of two second tracks (???)

I bought Janet's last album "All for You" and wasn't too impressed with it. Although there were a couple of really good tracks on it, when you compare it to the quality of THIS album, it just pales in comparison. Here's a look at the best tracks . . .
THAT'S THE WAY LOVE GOES probably the most famous hit from the album. laidback, soulful "bedroom music".
YOU WANT THIS sounds like a cross between "Rhythm Nation", "When I Think Of You" and "The Pleasure Principle" and has a very catchy chorus.
IF this apparently contains a Supremes sample but I don't recognise it cos I;m not really up on older music. This is a fairly rocky song which starts off with a slightly scary guitar riff and has a faintly menacing beat. It features some extremely saucy lyrics (she sings "if I was your girl all the things I'd do to you" and then talks about what she will do!) and alternates between slightly rapped verses and then her usual deceptively innocent vocals on the chorus.
THIS TIME this is a very dramatically produced song. It begins with opera singing, then a burst of drums give way to rocky r & B pop about leaving a relationship. It has strong choruses, a fantastic tune, and a cool break in the middle in which the opera singing begins again and the drums restart in an almost threatening way. This is definitely my favourite song on the album, and has been for years.
THROB the dirtiest song she has ever done? a dancey track (the music almost sounds like a speeded-up version of "Thats the Way Love Goes") which features a lot of orgasmic moaning and very little actual lyrics, but is strangely infectious in spite of this.
WHAT'LL I DO a country style song which sounds slightly at odds with janet's sweet soulful voice. And yet it works.
BECAUSE OF LOVE starts with the infectious "shoop da-da" and reminds me of "All For You" without the dirty connotations. It's cheesy but brilliant!
AGAIN another single and one of the best. I'm not a ballad girl in general but I love this one. It's so simple and sweet and Janet's sweet voice trembles with emotion.
ANYTIME, ANYPLACE another laid back soulful tune in a similar vein to "That's the way Love Goes" - but filthier" Lyrics like "skirt around my waist", "I don't give a damn what they think, I want you now" once again sung so sweetly you can't really take offence.
WHOOPS NOW the cheesiest silliest chorus in the world. And yet you can't help but smile and sing along.
The main disadvantage with this album is the following: there are 28 tracks on the album. But only about 14 of these tracks are actual SONGS. The rest aren't even skits. They're maybe a sentence, or two or three words, which lead into the next song. I don't see why she couldn't have just left these out, or put them in as part of the song itself. There just seems no point to them.
The main advantage are the songs themselves. To have ten songs of great quality on an album is actually fairly impressive when you consider that a lot of albums seem to be made up mainly of b-list quality tracks (Mis-teeq's "Eye Candy", which I have just reviewed, being a prime example of this). And Janet isn't afraid to vary her style of music, going from the rockier to the soulful, from danceto country. No matter what she does on this album, it still has her own distinct stamp on it, and is still recognisably her.
And I am very much in awe of her ability to get away with some of the lyrics she comes out with. "Your smooth and shiny feels so good against my lips, sugar"? And yet, coming out of her mouth, it sounds so innocent and sweet. How on earth does she do it?
Oh, and the other advantages? It has all the words. You can happily sing along all day if you want. AND you can dance at the same time. It is definitely an album that has everything. If you like your r & b I would definitely advise it. With this album, Janet definitely proved that Michael has competition within his own family. And she has certainly also proved that she can last the distance, since she's still around a good ten years after this album came out! Although it would be great if she could produce an album this fantastic again - just to prove she could! Go on Janet, you know you want to!!!
Janet's music is fantastic, she is one of the best pop/R&B artists there is and the album Janet was groundbreaking and also was a huge sucess. She blended her R&B with pop so well in this album and produced a very long very enjoyable album. Love part 2 is one of my favouite songs, the general theme of this album is actually love and many of the songs talk about love, the album is fantastic, any R&B fan and pop fan should have a copy of this album ...

JanetJackson's style and songs just gets better and better. I don't usually buy remix albums but I gave this a try and I am glad I did now, this is a fantastic album which I absoluely love. Where are you now is a fantastic track and Janet's lyrics are refreshingly original and thought provoking, she is a multi talented artist whose music is a joy to listen to. What'll I do is a classic and these remixes make them sound like new songs, this is a long album, when Janet releases material, it is always quality music and this is no exception, any JanetJackson fan should buy this. ...
Advantages: A few big tunes Disadvantages: Some weaker tracks
?Control? came out in 1986 and was the third album by JanetJackson. Although strictly a Pop album, this has Janet switch form here bubblegum years to a more exciting one as R&B, Hip Hop and Swing was brought into here material starting here. Of the nine tracks on this, seven of them when out as singles (most of which went straight into the top ten).
1. ?Control?
To kick the thing off you find her breaking free as she moves on from being managed by her father, and having the chance to express this through new, vibrant music, and with the new age sounds of Electronic and Hip Hop being prominent at this time, the novelty of it meant that she had to bring this into her stuff here. It has her concentrate upon speaking of her journey from being fully-obedient to her parents to this now.
**Four Stars**

I have to include this album when I talk about JanetJackson, this with Velvet Rope are my favourite JanetJacksons albums. Rhythm Nation 1814 contains her best lyrics, similar to Michael Jackson interesting enough, about worl peace, poverty etc. There is a lot of feeling in this album, you can tell that by the lyrics and the tone and how Janet sings the words. Any Jackson fan should have this album. Rhythm Nation, the track itself is the best Jackson track ever, her songs really make you think. The cover is really good, a lot of thought went into, into the whole album, her best work. ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Janet Jackson, Kathleen Battle (vocals); Chuck D (rap vocals); The Flow, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (various instruments, programming); Dave Barry, Frank Stribling (guitar); David Eiland (alto saxophone); Kenneth Holmen (tenor saxophone); Bernie Edstrom, Robert Hallgrimson, Steve Wright, Jeff Gottwig (trumpet); Steven Pikal (trombone); Larry Waddell (Hammond organ); Jimmy Wright (keyboards, background vocals); Mark Haynes (bass, drum programming); Stokley (drums); Jossie Harris, Tina Landon, Ann Nesby, Jamecia Bennett, Core Cotton, Marie Graham, Jeff Taylor (background vocals); Sounds Of Blackness. Producers: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson, Jellybean Johnson. Recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Edina, Minnesota. Janet Jackson's performance of "That's The Way Love Goes" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female." "That's The Way Love Goes" (Janet Jackson/James Harris III/Terry Lewis) won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Song." With JANET, the crown princess of the Jackson family steps out from behind her carefully buffed image to create a sensual new musical persona for herself. Producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis play cat and mouse with modern R&B forms by juxtaposing classic Motown samples (the Supremes on "You Want This" and "If") and Jackson 5 harmonies against slamming dance grooves, as echoes of girl group innocence crash head on with Janet's willful sexuality (to particular effect on ballads like "Where Are You Now" and "The Body That Loves You"). Janet Jackson's ambition rises to the level of her talent on a number of JANET's songs. On "This Time" a tender acoustic overture (punctuated by Kathleen Battle's elegant operatic soprano) gives way to a dark dance track and tales of love gone sour, while her moaning hyperventilations on "Throb" would give Donna Summer pause, as Janet imparts a sleek hip-hop aura to the traditional disco groove. Elsewhere JANET mixes and matches different genres with grace and good humor, from the Stax/Volt country funk of "What'll I Do," to the jitterbugging dance lines of "Funky Big Band" and the stand-up-and-be-proud shouts of "New Agenda." JANET backs away ever so slightly from the hard dance grooves that originally cemented her reputation, to focus instead on her emerging depth as a ballad singer and canny pop-diva.

Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.72) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's." Rolling Stone (6/24/93, p.78) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...touches R&B, hip-hop, soul, funk, rock, house, jazz and opera with the singer's pop sensibility....The princess of America's black royal family has announced herself sexually mature and surrendered none of her crown's luster in the process..." Q (7/93, p.94) - 2 Stars - Average - "...There's enough for a string of singles, but as a serious post-rap soul contender it pales next to today's techno-literate 19-year-olds. And as proof of maturity, this 75 minutes of risibly relentless rumpo will probably only fool her brother..." NME (5/29/93, p.31) - 8 - Excellent - "...a bold, slick plaything, this is as good an album as any Jackson has made...."
