culture is among the most ambitious and exalted of screen epics, rich in visual splendour, historic detail, psychological nuance, and exemplary performances. Count French composer Maurice Jarre among the stars, for his single line main theme has become among the most instantly recognisable in screen music, evoking the vast sweep of the desert horizons with a perfect synthesis of the exotic and the romantic. As a musical reflection of Lawrence's own romantic fascination with Arabian culture, Jarre's overture and various film cues make this an enduring classic. --Sam Sutherland

film music at its finest. In tune with the composer's roots, this is actually a score dominated by percussion--something that might surprise listeners expecting nothing more than the one infamous theme. This re-issue of an expanded soundtrack album enlarges upon what was previously available, and makes for sometimes shockingly powerful listening as the predominant sound becomes the pounding of drums. It's a crisp performance, helped by an overseeing eye from the composer. Whether this will remain the definitive presentation is hard to say since, like the concert hall programmers, it's a favourite that folks just love to keep recording. This does, however, come with packaging that takes the eye and is crammed with facts from producer and Jarre fan James Fitzpatrick.--Paul Tonks

Advantages: A film in which you can smell, see and feel the desert - perfection. Disadvantages: Some think it's too long - they are wrong!!
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
DIRECTED BY DAVID LEAN
INTRODUCTION
Anyone who has been following my recent film and DVD reviews (and if you have, thank you!!) would be forgiven for thinking that this was David Lean season!!
David Lean has produced so many of my favourite films and is without doubt one of our finest directors.
I am nearly at the end (stop cheering) of my reviews of his work - although there are still a couple tucked away (sorry!!) this review is about a film that in my opinion is one of the best pieces of film making ever.
Lawrence of Arabia gained a grand total of 7 Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Musical Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Best Art Direction) in the Academy Awards ceremony of 1962.
This review is about the adaption of Lawrence ...
Advantages: Remastered, making of documentary Disadvantages: Cant think of a Thing!
This has got to be one of the greatest all time films ever made, and the dvd enhancements add to a very crisp finish.
I wont ruin the film itself for you, but the performance by Peter O'Toole was simply magnificant.
Steven Speilburg and Martin Scorsose were the ones to re-mastered this edition, aswell as the remastering by the London Philomonic Soundrack for the film.
Their is Also included in the dvd is the "making of lawrence of arabia" which is very extensive and has a wonderful commentary by Omar Sharif on the director David Lean.
Their are Lots of on-set pictures which were unseen previously and other goodies for those with DVD drives on their laptops and PCs.
Special Features:
2.20 Wide Screen
DVD 9 Superbit
English
Region 2
Dolby Digital 5.1 English
Dolby Digital 5.1 ...
Advantages: Belongs in the collection of all music fans Disadvantages: Everyone complains his stuff sounds "samey"
I grew up listening to it in the mid to late 70's as my brother used to play it a great deal on his stereo and have fallen asleep to its dulcet tones many times.
It makes me think of Space, of orbiting the Earth (no wonder my friends think I'm weird) but its a classic in the electronic soundscape. Listen to modern bands like Air and you can really hear the very heavy influences of Jean-Michel Jarre's early work.
Lots of lesser informed people will tell you this is his first album which is simply not true, he'd already released Les Granges Brulees which was a film soundtrack for an Alain Delon film and Deserted Palaces but both of them are a lot more experimental than Oxygene. If you've heard of them then your a fan. If you own them (like I do) then your a very big fan!
Oxygene part 4 was released as a single (its video features ...
