Green at his best
Review of Soho Session - Live At Ronnie Scott's - Peter Green & Splinter Group by
gregcom
Advantages: some great performances, good mix of songs
Disadvantages: if you dont like the blues this isnt for you
soho live, is a 2 CD live album by peter greens splinter group, recorded at ronnie scotts famous jazz club. there are 17 tracksin total including famous peter green songs from his fleetwood mac days 'albatross', black magic woman', 'green manalishi' and 'rattlesnake shake'. the rest of the tracks are a mix of 7 blues standards and 5 songs from the bands robert johnson songbook album including 'travelling riverside blues', 'last fair deal gone down' ... ...quality is very good and all the musicians in the group are in good form here. Green has certainly regained his touch after going off the rails a bit in the 70s and 80s.
the stand-out track is 'the green manalishi' from Green's fleetwood mac days. it is a brilliant insight into a troubled mind and is a dark and brooding performance.
overall, this is a very accomplished album which shows all the different facets of green as a solo performer. ...

Review of Alone With The Blues - Peter Green by
gregcom
Advantages: some blistering tracks, great traditional blues
Disadvantages: a few too many dud tracks
alone with the blues is a collection of songs from throughout legendary blues guitarist peter green's career, including his solo work, tracks with the original fleetwood mac, and a couple of early bluesbreaker cuts.
this is a very traditionally blues orientated album. the highlights being some brilliant renditions of 'sandy mary' and 'jumping at shadows'. also included is a near identical cover version of robert johnson's 'kind hearted woman', which ... ...is very true to the original style and technically impressive. the rest of the tracks are of mixed quality. Greens career flounders in the 70s and 80s as he struggled with mental illness and he is obviosuly not at his best with songs like 'tribal dance'. the inaly has a good biography and track info, along with some good pictures. overall, this is an album of mixed quality that shows green at his brilliant best and his unmemorable worst. i would ...

Very talented guitar playing!!!
Review of Guitar Trio, The - Paco De Lucia/John McLaughlin/Al Di Meola by
dangaroo
Advantages: Nice guitar jazz
Disadvantages: Only instrumental
The album "The Guitar Trio" features the three musicians John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia. It was released in 1996 and was their first get together in 13 years, all three incredibly talented guitar players get together to produce a blend of styles which has an emphasis on Spanish classical.. undoubtedly down to Paco De Lucia.
The intricate jazzy guitar playing is bliss to hear, each track is written at a superb pace, managing to speed ... ...sure of where a speedy guitar solo is going to come in.
For anyone with a love for either Spanish music or guitar jazz albums then this a definite must, it's an album made by 3 superbly talented musicians if not some of the best too, the downside however for me is that I can only bare so many instrumental tracks in a row without any singing whatsoever and I guess that's why I'd be more entertained by a band like Puerto Flamenco, who provide the ...

Cream made from soy-milk
Review of Around The Next Dream [Remastered] - BBM by
gregcom
Advantages: excellent musicianship, good for Cream fans
Disadvantages: unoriginal songs
around the next dream is a collaboration between Gary moore, blues guitarist formerly of thin lizzy, and Jack bruce and ginger baker, former members of 60s supertrio Cream. If you are a fan of Cream then you will probably recognize some startling similarities between some of the songs here. the 12 studio tracks are all originals but songs such as 'where in the world' and 'glory days' seem to be direct imitations of Cream classics 'we're going wrong' ... ...songs in their own right, but they aren't as good as the Cream versons. There are also two live tracks which are pretty good, if a little drawn out.
the musicianship is generally very good, moore is an accomplished player and apart from the songs mentioned before, he doesnt seem to be in the long shadow left by eric clapton. bruce is in good voice and his wandering bass is still excellent. ginger baker is solid throughout, if not completely dazzling. ...

after hours review
Review of After Hours [Remastered] - Gary Moore by
gregcom
Advantages: great blues, really fast guitar work
Disadvantages: a couple of songs sound alike
Gary moore is one of the most undervalued blues guitarists. this album represents some of his most consistent work and if you like blues guitar then this is an album that you need to buy. Moore combines the tone and tradition f the blues but incorporates blistering speed - he really is one of the fastest players around. there are some cracking songs on this album, the highlights being 'story of the blues' 'separate ways', 'jumping at shadows' and ... ...you baby'. on this album Gery uses the les paul that was given to him by Peter Green of Fleetwood mac and yardbirds fame. the only qualm is would have is that a couple of songs are a bit similar, but hey - they are still good. this is an excellent starting point for people looking to get into gary moore or the blues in general. Moore's album 'still got the blues' is another one i would recommend but this is the better album overall. ...
