HIGH-HEELED BLUES FROM A MULE KICKIN' MAMA

Advantages: May be the best contemporary white female blues singer and acoustic guitarist you'll ever hear.
Disadvantages: None

...(A New Yorker myself, in high school at the time, I only went there once, but the day I popped in Al Kooper , the musical genius behind the first and only worthwhile -- pre-David Clayton Thomas -- incarnation of “Blood, Sweat and Tears” was in the store. I just stood there and gaped before buying a belt and leaving.) For all I know, Rory was in the room as well at the time, helping her Dad run the place.) Just being in the sandal shop was an apprenticeship ...
...go. The album High Heeled Blues was released in 1981 on Rounder Records as an LP and re-released in 1989 as a CD (Rounder CD # 3061). I was turned on to her by Bob Carlin, the folk and roots music producer/host at the National Public Radio station in Philadelphia where I was news director, producer and anchor from the late 70s to early 80s. Unlike the more sophisticated later recordings, this one has an air of breezy innocence about it, as befits ...

PEOPLE WILL TALK!

Advantages: Great, pared-down, soul music!
Disadvantages: Not given the promotion it deserves!

It was on the Jools Holland show, on a night when The Who should have been playing, that James Hunter stepped in at short notice to replace Pete and Rog. Roger was unwell, and Jools needed to fill a couple of spots. The name didn't ring a bell, but, as soon as I heard him sing, I immediately recognised James as Howling Wilf! Back in the 80's, Howling Wilf and The Veejays were ploughing a lonely blues furrow in the midst of bands with big hair, big ...
...The Whites" mini album, Howling Wilf announced his intentions of bringing traditional soul and blues to the masses. It was good to see that, twenty odd years later, that he was still doing the same thing. "People Gonna Talk" sounds like it could have been recorded somewhere in Memphis in the late 50's or early 60's. James wears his influences on his sleeve. There are echoes of early James Brown and Sam Cooke, along with Ray Charles, Ben E King and ...

Happy days

Advantages: beutiful music
Disadvantages: none

Ted Hawkins busked on Venice Beech Florida, and attracted large crowds there before being bought to the attention of the UK audience by the globetrotting Andy Kershaw. The music itself is very simple, with in most cases simple accoustic guitar and Ted's voice as the only instruments, occaisionally joined by his wife on vocals and a couple of frindes on drums and bass. Within this setting Ted is able to wring every amount of emotion with just the ...

A Great Archive Let Down By Sequencing

Advantages: Fidelity is great, songwriting, guitar playing and vocals superb, thorough research
Disadvantages: Sequencing - the track order is frustrating

...music fans a like. The Complete Robert Johnson comes across like a standards song book, the contents of which has given birth to numerous cover versions from acclaimed and esteemed bluesmen and rockers from across the globe spanning six decades. There is however, one glaring disappointment with this set and that is with the sequencing. This is the most comprehensive collection of Johnson's material and as such there are alternate takes included. ...
...by side with their original counterparts which makes the whole very hard to listen to as each track is repeated, albeit a variant of the original. It still baffles me as to why the alternates were not on a separate disc from the originals. Even for me, a hardened fan of the genre, it makes for difficult listening if you using an old fashioned CD player. This is a wonderful and comprehensive archive but unfortunately does not work as a listening experience ...

An Older and Wiser Sequel

Advantages: Great voice, band
Disadvantages: None

...stronger with every listen. Feels Like Home with The Handsome Band and special guests. I am a big fan of Norah Jones. Her first album, Come Away with Me was an absolute classic. The album was certified diamond by the RIAA on February 15, 2005 having sold over 10 million copies in its first three years of release. It won five awards at the Grammy Awards of 2003, including "Record of the Year", "Album of the Year", and "Song of the Year" for "Don't ...
...to an article I read, Feels Like Home is the second album by jazz songwriter Norah Jones, released in 2004. It sold a million copies in the first week of its U.S. release, the first album to do so since Britney Spears' Oops!... I Did It Again (2000) and it was the second best-selling album of 2004, with about 4 million copies sold. It sold 1,920,000 copies on its first week worldwide. Probably the most popular song from the album is track number ...
