PEOPLE WILL TALK! Advantages: Great, pared-down, soul music! Disadvantages: Not given the promotion it deserves! It was on the Jools Holland show, on a night when The Who should have been playing, that James Hunter stepped in at short notice to replace Pete and Rog. Roger was unwell, and Jools needed to fill a couple of spots. The name didn't ring a bell, but, as soon as I heard him sing, I immediately recognised James as Howling Wilf! Back in the 80's, Howling Wilf and The Veejays were ploughing a lonely blues furrow in the midst of bands with big hair, big ... ...The Whites" mini album, Howling Wilf announced his intentions of bringing traditional soul and blues to the masses. It was good to see that, twenty odd years later, that he was still doing the same thing. "People Gonna Talk" sounds like it could have been recorded somewhere in Memphis in the late 50's or early 60's. James wears his influences on his sleeve. Happy days Advantages: beutiful music Disadvantages: none Ted Hawkins busked on Venice Beech Florida, and attracted large crowds there before being bought to the attention of the UK audience by the globetrotting Andy Kershaw. The music itself is very simple, with in most cases simple accoustic guitar and Ted's voice as the only instruments, occaisionally joined by his wife on vocals and a couple of frindes on drums and bass. A Great Archive Let Down By Sequencing Advantages: Fidelity is great, songwriting, guitar playing and vocals superb, thorough research Disadvantages: Sequencing - the track order is frustrating ...music fans a like. The Complete Robert Johnson comes across like a standards song book, the contents of which has given birth to numerous cover versions from acclaimed and esteemed bluesmen and rockers from across the globe spanning six decades. There is however, one glaring disappointment with this set and that is with the sequencing. This is the most comprehensive collection of Johnson's material and as such there are alternate takes included. ... ...by side with their original counterparts which makes the whole very hard to listen to as each track is repeated, albeit a variant of the original. It still baffles me as to why the alternates were not on a separate disc from the originals. Even for me, a hardened fan of the genre, it makes for difficult listening if you using an old fashioned CD player. This is a wonderful and comprehensive archive but unfortunately does not work as a listening experience ...
