Kind Of Blue - Miles Davis
Advantages: Virtuoso trumpet at its best Disadvantages: Only the re-released version has the sound quality it deserves
...record shop. I spotted "A Kind Blue" and instantly withdrew my wallet and the CD was mine. As readers you will probably like to know about the music is like! Well simply it is divine, some find Miles Davis's music too intense and muddled, but it takes either an uninterested listener to ignore this or a fascinated listener to understand and appreciate it, I hope that the buyer will lean towards the latter of these two opposites. ...

Take Five with Time Out
Advantages: SImply Brilliant music Disadvantages: Slightly too short
...changing time. His famous 9/8 time signatures can be seen in a number of tracks featured on this CD. Born in 1920 Brubeck is one of the world's foremost jazz pianists. This recording comes from an early part of his career when he was the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and was released originally in 1959 to much critical acclaim (indeed it was his first platinum selling album). Following this he went on to work mainly for a jazz American radio station, but ... ...Brubeck sounds, mainly the 9/8 time signature. This is a classic jazz piece, with all four soloists in the band contributing. It is fast paced and loud, exactly what you would expect from a jazz piece. It begins loud and fast, then the middle section is quiet and downbeat, followed by a final frantic section with Brubeck at the helm. Though rather long at 6 minutes 44 seconds I would class this is an almost perfect piece of jazz music. By far and ...

Breathtaking
Advantages: Outrageously good! Music, playing, production, booklet - everything is great! Disadvantages: I honestly can't think of one thing.
...Bass Hit (alt. take), 8. Milestones (alt. take), 9. Straight, No Chaser (alt. take).
The Music
The opener, Dr Jackle, is furious! The three horns take off in unison at a blistering pace, with the rhythm section driving along. The speed makes for some fine solos by Miles and Coltrane, both showing their technical brilliance. 'Trane trades choruses with Cannonball in the middle, a furious battle, and Chambers takes a bowed solo on the bass. 'Sid's ... ...is a comprehensive blues. Red Garland had stormed out of the studio after a fight with Miles during the session, so Miles himself accompanies the sax solos on the piano with dense chords. His trumpet solos are top notch, making extensive use of pitch bend and other bluesy touches. The saxes take flight on 'Two Bass Hit', an old-style sax battle breaking out in the Dizzy Gillespie-composed tune. Neither comes off badly - both have outstanding speed ...

Kind of Majestic
Advantages: Perfect album for anyone who appreciates jazz or music in general. Disadvantages: None.
'Kind of Blue' is quite simply a modern day masterpiece and in my honest opinion, one of the greatest albums of all time, most certainly the greatest jazz album. Everything about it is just top class. From the personnel involved, to the music itself. Miles was not only a superb jazz musician but he was working with other musicians of that time who were not far from exceptional - John Coltrane, Adderly and Chambers to name a few. It was a formidable ... ...think they only spent 51 days recording this album is mindblowing. You don't even have to be a jazz fan to enjoy this album, I wouldn't say I was a massive jazz fan, I enjoy it and that's it. I have other jazz albums in my music collection, but 'Kind of Blue' always stands out as the definitive album. It's compelling, relaxing, spellbinding and just full of genius. I don't really understand jazz as a genre, I don't understand what it's about, but ...

A Great Archive Let Down By Sequencing
Advantages: Fidelity is great, songwriting, guitar playing and vocals superb, thorough research Disadvantages: Sequencing - the track order is frustrating
...music fans a like. The Complete Robert Johnson comes across like a standards song book, the contents of which has given birth to numerous cover versions from acclaimed and esteemed bluesmen and rockers from across the globe spanning six decades. There is however, one glaring disappointment with this set and that is with the sequencing. This is the most comprehensive collection of Johnson's material and as such there are alternate takes included. ... ...by side with their original counterparts which makes the whole very hard to listen to as each track is repeated, albeit a variant of the original. It still baffles me as to why the alternates were not on a separate disc from the originals. Even for me, a hardened fan of the genre, it makes for difficult listening if you using an old fashioned CD player. This is a wonderful and comprehensive archive but unfortunately does not work as a listening experience ...
