I was introduced to this guitar ledgend through a relation, and I loved it straight away.
Although I am a fan, i would spend your money on the Live In San Francisco to see what this man can pull off live, and it will leave your jaw dropped.
Although he has been dubed as an instrumental artist he has done vocal work on some of his albums, combined with instruments. An example of this is Flying in a Blue Dream.
I would say that over all he is a very enjoyable artist to those who either have guitar appreciation or play
guitar. And people who like the likes of Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson.
The best thing is to go to www.satriani.com and look in the discography and listen to some of the sound clips there. To judge for your self.
ADDED ON : There is no album called "guitars" , but as other reviews has put on the following tracks from another album, i will follow suit with my review of them ..... ( hummm, )
There for i shall pick the top ten songs that you should check out as introduction to Satch .
1. Surfing with the alien ( From album Surfing with the alien ) One of joes most famous tunes, and one that casued him to get noticed by the big wide world. A fast pacy tune with a bouncy melody laced with very technically demanding performace techniques which are stunning and make this possibly one of joes best compositions ever. Summed up... Fast, rock, echos of surf style rhythms and melody
2. Summer Song ( Album = Extremist ) A very happy bouncy song, one of my favourites, starting with opening harmonics leading to a very catch riff for the main melody. This theme devlopes throughout the piece to make it a very good easy listening song. Summed up Fast happy, good mood generating :-)
3. The Crush of Love ( Album = Time Machine ) A very fat bass line and emotional guitar playing makes this piece a real joy to listen to, for sheer expression, although the stuido version is now way as good as the live ones its a great sound track with a racy introducton and chorus with more laid back funky verses where you can just soak it up. Summed up . Head nodding stuff ! Easy to listen to, check out the live in San Francisco
4. Ceremony ( Album = Crystal Planet ) One of joes more heavy tracks, it starts mellow and builds gradually builds up to a explosion of speed and melodic playing where you are left wondering how he can play that many notes with out messing it up... A really driving rhythm with drums and bass that really gives this song a pumping feeling, and its great as a work out tune to jog to !
5. Flying in a blue dream ( Album = Flying in a blue dream ) A smooth very technical piece. One of joes more mellow tracks with very smooth fast playing. This piece is another easily listening one where you soak up the atmosphere it generates, and is quite relaxing. Summed up. Melodic and relaxing
6. Souls of Distortion ( Album = Is there love in space ) A heavy track taken from his new album, A real show that joe can taylor his talents to a wide vartity of styles, here creating a good rock track with good harmony, in unison with the melody played. This track has light sections so dont be put off thinking its metal... its not.
7. One Big Rush ( Album = Flying in a blue dream ) A classic, starts with a drum fill then launches straight in at the deep end of the action with a pacey rhythm section which really lays the foundation to the rest of the track. This comes together with the melody which is not at lightning speed, but really does drive along with the rhythm and is just fantastic live ! A good fat bass line doesnt go amiss on here with good drum playing from Mr Campatelli
8. Mind Storm ( Album = Strange beautiful Music ) A heavy track which really have a fat bass section, with some fantasitc harmony playing, but a bit of an odd section of guitar synth styled music not the best that hes done, but the rest of the track, is just so powerful and dominat it can be forgiven. Summed up.. heavy rock with a relatively slow melody, but good riffs as it sweeps over many sections of different emotions
9. Always with me always with you ( Album Surfing with the alien ) Alovely ballard from this album simple and very effective with some lovely melody parts it just makes you kinda day dream. I saw him play this live recently and the reaction from the crown was to huge applause when he started to almost staring in captivation with the song. Truely great.
10. Rubia ( Album = The Extremist ) A ballard dedicated to his wife, is moving and slow. It has something about it which makes you completely relaxed and chilled out, yet feeling slightly sad for no reason. Summed up, gentle, tender song not over powering and a nice relaxing listen.
But you would do well to check out his other songs... these are but a few of the gems he has !
