The begger's opera for threepence
Review of Threepenny Opera, The - Kurt Weill by  MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Masterpiece of musical theatre
Disadvantages: Ending is little too "all lived happily ever after"

...The Threepenny Opera transforms opera to the musical theatre. Originally adapted from John Gay’s The Beggar’s opera in 1928, to Die Dreigroschenoper, by German composer Kurt Weill and lyricist Bertolt Brecht, the score weaves together elements of grand opera with cabaret and jazz. The English translation and adaptation was then completed by Marc Blitzstein in 1954. Brecht met Weill in 1927, when the two men discussed using the genre of opera to combine their respective abilities. Their first collaboration was the songspiel, The Little Mahagonny performed during 1927. The two men soon then started work on a full-scale opera. Brecht took on the script of the Beggars Opera for Weill to write the modern melodies and Brecht added several new scenes and songs. A CD of the Threepenny Opera can be purchased for £12.99 from most good... Read review

McCormack Songs Vol.1 - John McCormack
Review of McCormack Songs Vol.1 - John McCormack by  seanobolg

Advantages: beautiful Irish classic voice
Disadvantages: the old irish classic abit over played

...When I put this album on it really sparked a great emotion and pride inside to be Irish. John McCormack sings these Irish classics with a powerful mans voice that really brings your imagination into the heart and sole of the music. This album is a peacful and relaxing trip down memory lane.John McCormack's singing style combines the beatiful melodys of a classical trained voice with the stricking sound of a strong Irish accent. This gives the album its uniqueness and gives it the storytelling quality that brings the peotic lyrics to life. This album is great value for money with up to eighteen tracks each track a popular classic of its own. The only issue with this album is it does contain all the classic Irish songs that are quite old and have been over played abit over the years.... Read review

Man a ribald rake, Man is Nature's sole mistake
Review of Best Of Gilbert & Sullivan, The - D'Oyly Carte Opera Chorus & Orchestra by  Newfloridian

Advantages: Not well known but is an important bridge in the historic cycle
Disadvantages: Not well known and quite dated

...of the skirmishes has changed from education to other matters. This opera is unusual in the Gilbert and Sullivan cannon as it preserves the three acts of the original play. The spoken dialogue is also in verse. THE SONGS This is a work when you feel that you know the tunes as they come around although there are few “stand-out” songs. It is on reflection that you realise that the full flowering of these motifs are found elsewhere in the catalogue. The quite short overture starts with a fast paced upbeat flourish but then concentrates on the quieter more reflective themes from the opera. The title of this review comes from the Lady Psyche’s solo (“Towards the empyrean heights”) at the beginning of Act 2. It is a response to a question from one of the students: “Pray you, tell us if you can, what’s the thing that’s known as man’. Once... Read review
