When "They Might be Giants" release an album you know that at some point you are going to stare dubiously at your stereo as the CD spins thinking, "Why exactly do I like this" "Should I really be liking this" "Why don't I just join my friends with their normal pop rock post-punk indie rap bands?"
Then you realise that the first track "Subliminal" which sounded fine to start with is now slowing down and then playing backwards. It then stops as if nothing has happened to be replaced by a track about a man who is glad to "back in my snail shell".
This is palpable nonsense and you can relax safe in the knowledge that you have "a thing" about you which no-one can touch, You have a conversation piece on your CD rack and soon all the dilemma and peer pressure of buying that new "Best Athems Album in the World Ever part 65" is gone from your mind.
But this does not help you decide if you want to listen to this album, but after you do listen to it, because listen now you will, you will understand.
As I have mentioned in my other reviews of this band - this album also has a very unlistenable song - "O Do not forsake me" is a Monk's chant, (although it is not Gregorian) and does feature a man with the lowest voice I have heard in a long time. If that doesn't whet your appetite then we have a song about "James Ensor" Belgian's famous painter, a smooth jazzy number (I am sorry I do not know exactly what the style is) "Extra Savoir-Faire"
The comedy rock which is a feature of their style is apparent throughout, but no more so thatn in "Unrelated thing" in which a man and a woman are talking and the man is trying to understand the woman, but he can't. It is a tragic love song really, although you would never guess.
There are better albums by this band, but anyway, it's all inspired lunacy and should be taken with a large pinch of salt. You will genuienly hear nothing like this band and when I hear of a band say "There is nobody who sounds like us" then They Might be Giants is the Yardstick by which they wil be measured.

This is a fine, fine album, possibly one of the best ever produced. You didn;t say exactly that in your review, maybe you haven't listened to it enough yet? :)
TMBG's latest album The Spine is an absolute gem too, buy it, review it, your eardrums will thank you for it.
