Advantages: A great concept album with good rock n' roll solos

...This album took far too long in the making, but is well worth a listen if you are into more rock n' roll than the heavier stuff. This is a rock opera basically similar to The Who's 'Tommy' and Queensryche's 'Operation Mindcrime'. The story is of Jonathan Steele, a kid some what ignored by his parents has they divide most their attention to his older brother. His dream of becoming a rockstar is his only way of making his olds proud of him. The first track the 'Titanic Overture' is an instrumental intro which ends with the plea for his parents to love him, kicking straight into the 'Invisible Boy' that again is a classic rock n roll style track that tells of Jonathan's neglect of his parents. 'Arena of pleasure' is about his meeting with record company manager 'Chainsaw Charlie' who is has his name suggests, sign up and coming talent... Read review

Advantages: Great talents
Disadvantages: The talents wore out and were never that good!

...Having written this opinion a while back now, the actual splitting of STEPS has not affected me at all! This opinion was all hyped on how long STEPS were going to last written back in 2001! Now they have actually split up... StEpS WAS a band of 5 which included Faye, Lisa, claire, Lee and H who had been around for quite a while and finally realised there time was up! I have no right to say that STEPS were a complete failure because they were totally 100% not! They were a sucessful band/group but came and went just like the once famous 'sPiCe gIrLs' but sTePs actually split making their ' long era' actually come to a shooting halt! Advantages: Unusual, uncomplicated and enjoyable
Disadvantages: A little over-sweet, maybe best in small doses

...After the bitterness of E's previous work - not surprising in view of what he had been through - this record comes as a surprise. The tone is immediately set by the delightful, whimsical cover design. At the risk of showing my age, yes Mark, I remember Altered Images and Jonathan Richman as well! There's an echo of both of them in the slightly childlike (not childish) aura throughout most of the tracks. The lead-off single "Mr E's Beautiful Blues" gives you a good idea of the treats in store. "I Like Birds" and "Jeanie's Diary" are the best examples, and things are kept suitably simple with mainly an acoustic guitar and brass band for backing. Some of the songs are less cheerful, particularly the sombre "Grace Kelly Blues". But overall this album is fun, and quite a breath of fresh air in the murkier waters of today's indie pop...
