Joni Mitchell's first collection of the 90's

Disadvantages: takes a little patience to listen too

This album from 1991 saw Joni Mitchell and her ex-husband Larry Klein in the producer’s chair, for her first release in the 90’s. The album opens with the atmospheric title track written in 1988 “Night ride home”. The impression of the night is conveyed to the listener by the use of a sound sample, which is that of chirping cicadas, the sound effect runs for the whole length of the song. This sound is what holds all the instruments used on the track along with the signature sound of Joni’s acoustic guitar playing style. At the start of the track along with the opening lines “Once in a while, in a blue moon, there comes a night like this, like some surrealist, invented this, 4th of July, night ride home” as the artist finishes this line the sublime bass playing of Larry Klein begins adding ...

Crickley Hall - More like Creepy Hall.

The Secret of Crickley Hall. James Herbert. When writing a book review I sometimes put to much plot, so this time I am going to try and get the balance right with this review. I bought this book a while back, picked it up and put it down. I thought it would be a ghost story that I wouldnt like. Well I was right and I was wrong. Whilst it is a ghost story, it is in a class of its own. An extrodinary written ghost story which grips you from the first pages and doesn't let go until the last full stop. Oh, and I was wrong, I loved the book ! The book begins with Herberts usual fantastic discriptive talents, setting Crickley Hall clearly in the readers mind. The narrative between the characters is superbly written and Herbert gives various chapters to each character showing the story from their points of view. The pace ...

Advantages: 18 tracks of pure brilliance and some wonderful lyrics

James are probably one of the most under-rated bands of the past 25 years. They formed in Whalley Range, Manchester in 1981. Band members came and went in a flurry of activity until the band came across Tim Booth dancing like a complete loon at a disco they had sneaked into. They invited him to join the band as their dancer (a la Bez in the Happy Mondays) but later he became their vocalist. This 'Best of' collection was released in 1998 and contains eighteen tracks of pure brilliance.
