Joy Spring [Digipak] - Clifford Brown

Advantages: 'With You', 'Damage', 'Fallen Angel' + many others
Disadvantages: 'You', and that's about the lowest point really

...Michael Jackson (Junior) attempts to continue to thrill with his second album. Comparing anyone to a musical talent the size of Michael Jackson is a huge feat to live up to, and whilst Chris Brown has repeatedly attempted to pay tribute to his idol - most noticeably with a World Music Awards performance impersonating that of Jacko's well-known 'Thriller' - the rising star himself still struggles to earn any kind of stature in the UK market. As always however there is a motive behind this review, and it's not to brainwash you all into submission that Chris Brown should be able to top our charts. My motive comes more to the recent breaking news of the 18 year-olds relationship with an umbrella salesmans favourite person, Rihanna, who is sitting pretty at two years Brown's senior as a global icon. Advantages: Not overlong at 10 tracks, gets better with each listen.
Disadvantages: Opening track not the strongest.

...All the best records take a few listens (at least) to reveal their true nature. On first play this sounded like a typical 2nd album - longer tracks, less up-tempo. A month on this has to be my favourite CD of 2007. Nearly all the 10 tracks have resolved into fantastic, atmospheric (and not always gloomy!) tales of urban life and escape. Great tunes underpin the songs, with the now-trademark steepling guitar riffs standing out most in the choruses. Some not unwelcome echos of The Smiths are to be found in the lyrics, most obviously in the title track, but tracks like Weight of the World and Escape The Nest are really uplifting, the latter also containing the finest moments on the album with its soaring, thrilling chorus. Disadvantages: By far the worst Machine Head Album let down by weak lyrical content

...'t recomend this album to anyone who hasn't heard of Machine Head, they have produced and provided the music industry with several Jems, but this ain't one of them.
