In Dubliners Fair City

Advantages: Good reading
Disadvantages: Using references a fair bit.

of Joyce's day but branching and blossoming into the world of colonial and post colonial literature". Joyce was influenced by Ibsen, and would establish for himself in "Dubliners": "even the most commonplace, the deadest among the living, may play a part in a great drama." Here is an intimately observed portrait of a city and its people at a time of radical social and political change. He writes in a great deal of commonplace detail, he does not moralise, he seems fascinated by sexual misbehaviour and delights in shocking the pious. Perhaps every aspect of the city of Dublin is not covered here. There are no accounts of the upper classes and none of the lowest, here are the middle and lower middle class people; clerks, salesmen, journalists, boarding house keepers, political hacks and jobbing musicians. This surely reflects Joyce's own ...

The Godfather: Part II review

Advantages: Engaging, immersive, great script
Disadvantages: May be too violent for some people

The Godfather: Part II is the second installment in the Godfather saga, chronicling the life and times of the Corleone family. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and co-written with Mario Puzo, this film won 6 academt awards, including best picture and best supporting actor for Robert De Niro. A noticeable difference with this film is that it presents two parallel storylines. One involves the now head of the Corleone family, Michael (Al Pacino), from 1958 to 1959 as he tries to expand the family's business by opening up a casino in Las Vegas, the other is a flashback showing his father, Vito "Don" Corleone from his childhood in Sicily to his founding of the Corleone crime family in New York. As with the first one, there is a lot of violence and murder, so it's not to everyone's taste. I know this film is held up as the exception to ...

Back to the Future Part II

Advantages: Nice to see what the 1980s thought of the 2010s are like
Disadvantages: None

Back to the Future Part II is an excellent follow up to the original. It was made in 1989, 4 years after the first one. It has lots of interesting concepts. Is it better than the first one? Read on... --- the BASICS --- Back to the Future Part II is a science fiction film about time travelling, starring Michael Fox and Christopher Lloyd as the 2 main lead characters and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The first film was about the invention of the time machine and Marty travelling by mistake to the year 1955 changing history. --- the PLOT --- Everything turned out well after Marty's little adventure in 1955 - his father can now stand up for himself, Biff now washes peoples cars and the McFlys are richer. Now happily in 1985 (BTTF 2 is set in 1985 despite it being made in 1989) the doc suddenly appears and said something happened to their ...
