No, seriously this album isn't what you'd expect. It's not folky or religious in any way. I like Daniel's voice to be honest but I've never really liked any material until now.
The album is a series of cover versions from the 1950s, 60s and 70s as the title suggests. It's may be rock 'n' roll but don't expect it to be anything that would shock Granny.
Here's a track list.
1. Hello Mary Lou 2. Oh Boy 3. Do You Wanna Dance 4. All Shook Up 5. Three Steps To Heaven 6. When 7. Girl Of My Best Friend 8. Come On Over To My Place 9. When You Walk In The Room 10. Daydream Believer 11. Sweet Caroline 12. Wonderful Tonight 13. Walk Right Back (Duet With Mary Duff) 14. Beautiful Sunday 15. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da 16. Is This The Way To Amarillo 17. Knock Three Times 18. I'm A Believer 19. Let's Dance 20. That'll Be The Day
Some of these songs I never liked to start with eg tracks 1, 6, 7 and 14 so I wasn't likely to enjoy them on this album.
I like the rest of the tracks. However, "I'm A Believer", "Daydream Believer", "Sweet Caroline" and in particular "Come On Over To My Place" are my favourites. That last track is spoiled somewhat as it still reminds me of the old "Wimpy" advert but never mind.
I love "Knock Three Times" but much like the others, I liked the originals as well.
The album cover sees Donald in a rather fetching leather jacket, sitting in a mock 1950s American diner. The advert for this album had the same set up.
Yes, it's Daniel O Donnell, and yes, it's not very original but music doesn't always have to be inspirational or ground-breaking. This will stir a few memories from people who grew up during those eras and for people of my age, they might know the songs anyway and can compare them with the originals. Some of the songs sound odd with an Irish lilt and Daniel isn't exactly breaking into a sweat but hey, it's fun.
The album was originally £11.99 when it was released but I'm sure it is available for a cheaper price now.
