Mail Order Madness
Review of Skellington - Cope, Julian by brownp1

Advantages: easy access pop, raw feel
Disadvantages: none

...In 1985 after releasing 2 albums on the Mercury label, Julian recorded Skellington and presented it to the label who promptly rejected it and him. In 1989 this 1st saw the light of daty on Zip records and is currently available on mail order from Julians own Magog records. Is this a record for hrdcore fans only - yes beacause a lot of the album has the feel of an unfinished demo with Julian acompanying himself on accoustic guitar, but no because of this quality all the songs are very listenable. Highlights are "Robert Mitchum" a carry over from the Big Three days and yhe freak out of "out of my mind on dope and speed". The only poor song is "incredibly ugly girl" - where the lyriscs are dodgy Worth a listen for the interested... Read review

The Room Is On Fire As She's Fixing Her Hair
Review of Room On Fire - Strokes (The) by Andy.mack

Advantages: All 11 tracks are amazing
Disadvantages: The two year wait between albums

...with the finished product and rather than release something they considered weak they disposed of that recording, got Raphael involved and started work again. The album really picks up where Is This It left off. The opening track “What Ever Happened?” starts the album the way it carries on. One thing about The Strokes is they certainly have a defined guitar driven sound and this one is no exception. The track opens with a fast drum and guitar combo, repeating for a short time before the vocals come in fairly quickly. The guitars vary slightly but carry on with a solid drumbeat backing it up nicely. Julian’s vocals sound really good throughout the track, which really is one of the things that appeals to me about The Strokes. “I wanna be beside her, She wanna be admired He said please dont make this harder No, I wont yet” One of my favourite tracks... Review of 1977 - Ash by juliebushnell

Advantages: tuneful melodies
Disadvantages: none

...1977 is a superb album. You will recognise most of it on a first playing from massive radio playing, and even featuring on Gran Turismo! Strongly Guitar based and Superb Moshing Material, all backed up with tunefull melodies and recitable lyrics. Live they are something else. Nu-Clear Sounds was released on 5/10/98 and it's good but doesn;t quite live up to 1977 in my humble opinion. There are good songs and they were all great live, I particularly enjoy low ebb but the highlight of ash still has to remain with loose control and Kung Fu.... Read review
