Advantages: Easy read and enjoyable subject matter Disadvantages: A bit of an obvious lead character
This isJulian Clarys debut novel and a fairly good read it is.
Plot
----------------
Johnny Debonair (aka JD, aka Johnny D!) grows up with his slightly odd mother and no father in Kent before being taken to stay at his Grandmothers in London when his mother gets a little too 'odd'.
It's here that Johnny begins to get a sense of himself through his Grandmothers more focused attention. Johnny moves back home and embarks on a relationship with the local high society boy before heading to Drama School. This quickly takes a peculiar turn when his new flat mate Catherine, introduces him to a dark and seedy new profession.
As Johnny's life begins to get more and more macabre he is suddenly given an opportunity to start on TV and he quickly becomes the best thing to hit the screen. But a dark past never stays hidden for long ...
Advantages: Consistent level of tracks Disadvantages: Erykah Badu is on it
Ok ive never seen this film but the soundtrack is damn good. Id heard the Jon B track on the radio and found that it wasnt to be released and the only place i could get it was on this album, so i went and got it and found a few little gems on here that i wasnt expecting!
It was released under the LaFace record label so Babyface had a hand in a lot of the production and arrangement but only features on one track. Very chilled and relaxed album
Tracks
Fire - Des'ree & Babyface. Im pretty sure this is a cover but i cant be 100% sure. It certainly sounds it. Anyway nice start to the album, easy tune to get into, easy on the ear and the only single to be released from this album i believe
Heat - Not all songs are warmth related, i promise. This song by Absolute is a good addition to the album. Absolute are two guys with two good ...
On my recent holiday to Malta i stayed in Le Meridien Hotel, located in Saint Julian's. I would not normally have stayed in a 5 star hotel, but I was lucky enough to win some money towards a holiday from the company that I work for. Obviously, with free money, you are going to push the boat out a bit, and I am glad we did!!
Location/Area
We arrived at the hotel in the dark, quite late on a Friday night. The taxi brought us round a few small streets and then up quite a steep hill, thus bringing us to the reception of the hotel. My first impression was that it was in quite a strange location, but this is because i had only just seen where we were, and also it was dark, so everything seems different. The doors to the reception are round the back of the hotel and on the ground level floor.
The hotel itself is situated on top ...

Album Notes
A solo album - yet not, JULIAN PLENTI IS SKYSCRAPER is the debut album from the alter ego of Interpol's frontman Paul Banks. Plenti played acoustic performances around New York City during the late '90s until Interpol took off in 2001, but shelved the moniker until '06. Since Banks is so distinctive as Interpol's voice, it's easy to think any music he's involved in would sound like his main gig, but in fact, one of the biggest differences between this record and his other work (and one that strengthens the case for him to have an alias) is Banks' singing style. His voice has gotten richer and less forced over the years, and songs like the gently persuasive album opener "Only If You Run" show off a softness that only surfaces occasionally in Interpol's music. JULIAN PLENTI IS SKYSCRAPER takes the scenic route, and it pays off with an intimate, subtle set of songs that are strong in their own right. It may not be a radical departure, but it's still nice to hear Banks in a different setting - even if it takes a different name for that to happen.
Album Reviews
Spin (p.91) - "[A] Bloc Partyish urgency drives 'Games for Days,' and 'On the Esplanade' blends acoustic quietude, shivering strings, and distant sampled voices." The Guardian - "...it nips along packed with languid inspiration, some quirky flourishes and a intimate feel that a full-band record might not be able to reproduce. Lovely stuff" Rolling Stone (p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "With his solo alter ego, he digs into his gloomy-balladeer side. 'Fun That We Have' turns Interpol's hard-charging drone into a heartsick hobble... Entertainment Weekly (p.60) - "Banks retains Interpol's gloomy atmosphere...but exchanges the band's orderly post-punk throb for a scrappier brand of alt-folk introspection." Q (Magazine) (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "'Only If You Run' has the anthemic uplift of an opiated killers and the brass-heavy 'Unwind' is both tender and triumphal."
