Brubeck Plays Brubeck. This three-CD set rightfully captures Telarc's solo Brubeck set, available singly as Just You, Just Me, along with the live quartet CD Late Night and the all-star session Young Lions & Old Tigers. What's so vital about this three-pack is the range of different Dave Brubecks it displays: there's the thoughtful, late-night dreaminess of the solo materials, which show customary harmonic flashes and wonderfully phrased complexities that manage to be familiar even when totally new. With Late Night you get a live set from Brubeck's late-career saxophonist-of-choice, Bobby Militello, who takes tunes at a pace that sounds inspired by the spirit of the late, great Paul Desmond. The set shows that Brubeck's careful development of his early work was definitive enough to last decades. Rounding out this set is a volume of duets and collaborations with a host of "young lions" (including Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove) alternating tunes with some "old tigers" (including vocalist Jon Hendricks and Gerry Mulligan). These are relaxed meetings, but none of them less than excellent. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Reviews: Q (6/93, p.97) - 3 Stars - Good - \"...Lionel Hampton imparts the same slamming exuberance to everything he does, and embodies the spirit of swing as it was originally conceived when they queued to get into the Roseland or Savoy. This is a session of freewheeling mainstream music...\"
Advantages: Chill is set at maximum Disadvantages: You might chill out too much
...in any setting where seduction is anticipated.
"Sweet as Cherry Pie" and "Why can't we live together" are about as up tempo as it gets on here, and that is still pretty laid back.
The saxophone playing that proliferates (good word!)on this album compliments her voice and style totally, and is worth the getting just to appreciate the vibe it sends out.
Don't let any preconceptions stop you from buying this album, although do listen to tracks from the second album before purchasing, should you like this one enough to want to get the follow up.
Basically this is a real unwinder of an album, use it's slow, flowing style of jazz to best effect when setting a "certain mood". Her voice is as thick as molasses, deep, velvety, and very chilled, and guys, if you're wearing Joop (aftershave for men) at the same time as playing this album, then I...

Advantages: Another great album with potential classics Disadvantages: Not enough tracks!
...Okay here it is, I'm tired of hiding my love for Lionel Richie songs, this man is great!!!!
Lionel Richie first found fame in the band called The Commodores during the Seventies and the group were signed by the famous Motown. He also writes for several artist so is respected in the industry.
I purchased a cd of Lionel's a few years ago beacuse I wanted some of the classics you all must of heard of - 'Hello' 'Three Times a Lady' 'Easy' the list can go on, I played it endlessly. His husky soulfull tones are so romantic and sultry, really relaxing music. He also does some wonderful upbeat tunes too for example 'Destiny' and 'Dancing on the Ceiling'
A good friend of mine then gave me tickets to see him live - wow! The man is an incredible live singer, he looks like every song is no effort at all. He hits every note precisely...

Advantages: Great jazz tunes from the Golden Age Disadvantages: None
...This is real jazz, from the real Golden Age of Jazz. It's got the pace, the rhythm, the fluid trumpet playing, the relentlessly enthusiastic, rolling piano playing and the clear diction of some excellent singing of vocalists who could not only hold a tune, but who could capture your heart and soul, too…
There's musicians with such great names as Muggsy Spanier, Meade Lux Lewis, King Oliver and Sidney Bechet. You do not get musicians called Muggsy nowadays. I wonder why?
As well as straight out jazz such as the Dippermouth blues, there's also the dreamy and melodic April in Paris from Charlie Parker. Some jazz aficionados reckon that Charlie Parker eventually sold out. Well, perhaps he did. But some of his earlier work still stands the test of time.
Jack Teagarden is on this CD, with So Many Times, a rather nice, well...
