Review of Whole Story, The - Kate Bush by zerbine28

Advantages: Unique sounds from a musically imaginative artist.
Disadvantages: Not likely to be to the popular taste.

.... A longstanding couple's fading romance results in the wife's resorting to tricks to 'test him.' Ends with the sound of breaking glass. Happy or sad ending? Kate is ambiguous. Summary and Recommendations. Kate has a great knack for putting together various pop and orchestral instruments and combining them with snippets of mundane sounds such as radio broadcasts, a chugging train, a drill sergeant's shouts, a bird's flapping wings, and the whipping of a helicopter's blades, creating fairly unusual songs that can be filled with unforgettable melodies, key changes, rhythms and aural sensations. It may be a bit of a challenge to the mind's ear at first, but the odd beauty of her songs will usually reveal themselves with time and closer attention. She has a fairly wide vocal range that does best as a soprano, stretching from hushed murmurs... Read review

Confessions of a Folk Music fan
Review of Little Lights - Kate Rusby by Merv

Advantages: Beautiful voice, incredible harmonies, every song tells a story
Disadvantages: None

...Lights’ is breathtakingly beautiful from start to finish. Its title, was supposedly inspired by coming home one dark night and only seeing her cat's eyes reflecting some dim light. Dominated by Kate’s incredibly warm soprano voice and backed by very subtle instrumentation it evokes tremendous atmosphere and emotion when you listen to it. Every song tells a story, the lyrics often filled with sadness. The album opens with ‘Playing of Ball’, which features traditional lyrics set to music by the singer herself. The story is a violent one of a girl who falls in love with a young man, but her father does not approve, and kills the boyfriend. Very simple melody, understated backing and harmonies but incredibly haunting. The second track addresses the oldest of love dilemmas in song called ‘I Courted a Sailor’... Read review

Pearl Harbor
Review of Pearl Harbor - Original Soundtrack by berlioz

Advantages: Not difficult listening
Disadvantages: So boring you could cry

...Pearl Harbor was a much anticipated and hyped film about the Japanese attack on the American naval base Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It boasted of great visual effects, historical accuracy and actors Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale to excite the young film goers. The film was shot down by critics and theater goers alike. Of the three-plus-hours of the film, the first two were wholly dismissed as boring and tedious, and when you got to the attack itself near the end, it wasn't enough to save the film from total destruction (despite the stunning visuals). The score reflects the film perfectly. It was mainly composed by Hans Zimmer, a well-known veteran of film scoring and the founder of Media Ventures organization, a house for young, similarly inclined composers like James Newton Howard, Steve Jablonski and Klaus...
