Advantages: Great songwriting
Disadvantages: a couple of 'weak links'

...There seems to be a bit of a popular jazz and soul revival going on at the moment in the wake of Eva Cassidy's influence - first Norah Jones, then Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, and now another newcomer to the game, Katie Melua. Granted, her success so far is probably due in no small part to the afore-metioned artists paving the way and getting the public interested in this type of music... but let me assure you, Katie Melua is not jumping on the proverbial bandwagon. One of the things that really makes her stand out is that she writes some of her own material, and plays the guitar too. It's always better if someone is singing their own stuff, cos you know they're really feeling what they're singing. This debut is surprisingly mature for someone of 19 in terms of songwriting - I think we can expect great things in the future... Read review
