Advantages: Great Johnny & June CD, Some Great Country Favourites Disadvantages: Some tracks to short, some too slushy!
. Johnny's vocals are effortless but it shows, he lacks some emotion in this spiritual song. June also seems to have something lacking. The backing vocals almost seem to overpower the song. There is a mix of strings, guitars that doesn't seem particualrly well balanced. There is just an overwhelming lack of emotion that has been so consistent thoughout this album.
It Takes One To Know Me
'It's true that I used to be cazy
And to harder to love than most men'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Written by June's daughter from her first marriage to Carl Smith, Carlene Carter, this is a wonderul end to the album. An equally balance song that really does seem to tells the story of the romance of JuneCarter and Johnny Cash before their marraige and indeed it delves into life after marraige, the song even finshes by Johnny singing 'And June you ...
Advantages: Samuel L Jackson, Feel good movie, uplifting Disadvantages: bits can feel manufactured, clichéd
The Movie
The real life coach (Ken) Carter made the news in 1999 for closing the Gym and banning any basketball activities because several of the students in his team were not doing well in the classroom. Six years later in 2005 Samuel L Jackson steps into Carter's shoes for the movie where he transforms an unfit, uneducated, uncaring bunch of delinquent kids who won 4 basketball games the previous season into winners. Not only winners in terms of them being undefeated within their chosen sport, but also winners in that he instilled pride into what was until recently a mob of unruly kids.
Of course the kids initially ...
Advantages: Excellent vocals, some really catchy songs, great instruments Disadvantages: Occasional hints of Shania Twain which scare me
The Carter-Cash family must surely be the royalty of country music. By the time JuneCarter married Johnny Cash she had been performing inher family band - the aptly named Carter Family - for decades. In true country style, June had a dramatic personal life, marrying three times; Johnny was her third husband. Each marriage produced a child, and Carlene Carter, whose album "Stronger" I'm reviewing here, was from her first marriage to a honky-tonk singer, Carl Smith.
Carlene started out as more of a rock singer than a country singer. Like her mother she's had a quite an eventful private life with much documented problems with addiction and failed marriages (she has been married four times and her third husband was the British musician Nick Lowe). The death of three members of her family in a short space of time also profoundly ...
