Advantages: Gorgeous and poetic Disadvantages: The movie
recognized was their cover of Bye Bye Love from my Mum's Everly Brothers LP. Because it was the first time a concert had been held at the stadium, no one had considered the traffic situation after the show. We walked back to the tube station, but we couldn't get on a train. We called a mini-cab but it couldn't get through the traffic. Eventually my Dad came and got us at three o'clock in the morning. It was the best adventure of my short life and the concert experience by which all future gigs would be measured and found lacking.
I started to collect Paul Simon records. First was Hearts and Bones ? a tragic telling of the disintegration of his marriage to Princess Leia. It's a magnificent record but one that is harder to listen to years on. I delved further back and came up with One Trick Pony, Simon's 1980 album that found him on the verge ...
Advantages: Makes you realise just how cool Blues can be Disadvantages: The sound quality though not bad might put some people used to 'polish' off
I always forget just how much I like Blues until I start listening to it again, though it can be hard to find it really pure and passionate these days. I have a couple of other Buddy Guy albums; one early on, his recordings for Chess Records, where he was a session player and though his desire to do so, was never allowed to cut loose (a mistake the head, Marshall Chess, recognised late on in the sixties when the likes of Hendrix, Clapton et al were crashing to stardom). The other, Damn Right I Got The Blues, from the nineties never quite cuts it. So what a pleasure it was to stumble upon Live At The Checkerboard Lounge.
Live At The Checkerboard Lounge is not quite a purist album but it's pretty close. Buddy Guy was approached by JSP Records, then with virtually no catalogue to produce a live album, as Guy at the time could ...
Advantages: Great location, clean and tidy, helpful staff Disadvantages: Expensive for Thai prices, a little noisey at night depending on your room
Buddy Lodge
I booked Buddy Lodge for my very first visit to Thailand having had it recommended by a couple of people. I was travelling from the UK alone and was being collected at the airport, but wanted to stay for a few days in Bangkok before moving down to my new home in Hua Hin.
Location
The hotel is located on the very busy Koh San Road in Bangkok, which is a haven for travellers from all over the world and aptly nicknamed "the centre of the backpacking universe". The street is actually heaving all day and well into the night with stalls, tuk tuks and bars. It?s towards the top of the street and you are likely to get dropped on in your taxi at this end if you?re travelling from the airport.
The road is approximately 1km long which only spans a couple of blocks but is home to countless budget guesthouses ...
