1 – 2000 Light Years Away Written by Billie Joe after his first kiss with now wife Adrienne, it’s a classic punk love song, and a good one to sing along to. Great lyrics and music, and an all-round classic. More fantastic guitar playing from Billie Joe and the trademark bass sound that only Mike Dirnt can achieve – has to be heard.
2 – One For The Razorbacks Another great song. Some good vocal contrasts with Billie Joe’s lead vocals in the chorus and Mike’s backing vocals. A really great song, and another good one to sing along to. Musically not the most complex song, but still a classic.
3 – Welcome To Paradise Any self-respecting Green Day fan will be only too familiar with this song. A later version of the track is on the Dookie album, and this is the first incarnation of the song. It does sound noticeably different to the trained Green Day ear, probably because this album was released in 1990, four years before Dookie. Definitely a Green Day classic.
4 – Christie Road This one’s a little different to the other songs so far – not very punky, more laid-back and chilled out. A good song, but certainly not the strongest on the album.
5 – Private Ale Not a Green Day classic, but still worth listening. It’s very reminiscent of early Green Day material, and would be liked by existing Green Day fans, but probably wouldn’t appeal to many other people. Not the strongest song by far.
6 – Dominated Love Slave Just like the song Blood, Sex And Booze, which was to appear on the Warning album ten years later, this song is about S&M and whips and chains! It’s sung in country and western accents, with country and western guitars and drums. A VERY different song, and very funny! It’s a nice mid-album interval, and a well-written song. More of a comedy track, but still great
7 – One Of My Lies Back to the good old mellow punk. This doesn’t sound anything like Billie Joe singing, but I think it is – some bits do sound like him, and I certainly don’t think it’s Mike or even Tré. A good song – again, not the best on the album, but a good listen.
8 – 80 This song is about Billie Joe’s wife Adrienne (Adrienne….. Adie…. 80…..makes sense if you say it in an American accent!). An alternative love song, and the chorus sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. Very well written, and definitely worth listening to.
9 – Android This sounds just like a song my band would do – especially the intro and chorus/verse intervals. Tight, but open punk, good use of power chords, and a song worth listening to.
10 – No-One Knows A nice melodic intro, which does seem to drag on for a bit, but soon enough the palm-muted distortion and drums kick in. A more mellow, chilled out song, and again not the strongest song on the album.
11 – Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? I know the answer ;-) This song was written about a character in Billie Joe’s favourite book. A very good song – great chorus. Well worth listening to.
12 – Words I Might Have Ate This song sounds a bit like The Monkees! No distortion on the guitars – it’s punk style, but it’s played on acoustic guitars!! Different, but f*ck me it works! (Ooh, my first Ciao swearword. Two years, not bad – had to come out sooner or later ;-)) A great song – has to be listened to. Classic Green Day, but with acoustic guitars! Genius!
13 – Sweet Children Sweet Children was Green Day’s band name before it was Green Day. Ironically enough, on the 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours album, they have a song called Green Day, which they wrote when the band was called Sweet Children!!! A good song, but not the strongest.
14 – Best Thing In Town Written by Billie Joe about a girl he thinks is the best thing in town. Another good song, but not the greatest. One to avoid unless you’re a big Green Day fan.
15 – Strangeland A good song, but not fantastic – sounds like a few of the others on the album, and isn’t radically different enough from Best Thing In Town. More classic punk.
16 – My Generation A good song to end the album on. A cover of a song by someone or other who I can’t remember – download it and you’ll know the one I mean!! A good cover, though!
Well, certainly not Green Day’s greatest album, but it still shouldn’t be overlooked. It was recorded on a very small budget in 1990, before Green Day were big. Mind you, they recently re-recorded and released 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, which I believe was from a similar year, so maybe they’ll re-record this next. The sound quality isn’t brilliant, but certainly isn’t bad.
Not many classics on this album, except obviously Welcome To Paradise, and 2000 Light Years Away. Dominated Love Slave, you will never forget – just so funny, it has to be heard. It doesn’t sound a thing like Green Day, but definitely the sort of thing they’d do for a laugh, so it’s them alright! If you’re a Green Day fan, this album must be added to your collection. If you’re not, then buy one of the later albums first, to get into their music, or you may find yourself disappointed.
Advantages: One or the best Disadvantages: nothing
...mainstream but it was really Kerplunk that was the important album. Back in 1991, Green Day comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals/guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar/vocals) and Tre Cool (drums) set out to make a low-budget album on a relatively small indie label. In 1992 the result, titled Kerplunk (playground slang for dog s**t), was released and was a minor hit. Its bare-bones punk sound attracted several major labels that were hungry for a new ... ...and Ash). Yesterday I saw Kerplunk in HMV at a “budget” price of £6.50. I decided, what the heck, I have a few pounds to spare and so I emerged from HMV with one more record in my ever-growing collection. When I came home, I didn’t expect Kerplunk to be on par with Dookie, Insomniac or Nimrod. Most bands grow better with time and make the best music far into their career (anybody remember Blink-182’s Buddha “record”) so I wasn’t expecting that much ...

Advantages: Some of the best pop punk ever. Disadvantages: relatively unknown album.
Firstly to all of the people claiming to be Greenday fans after the release of "Time of your life", I just want to state that Greenday were around a Long time before that single and that they have missed out on some amazing material.
The Band:-
Billie Joe Armstrong - Guitar and Vocals.
Mike Dirnt - Bass and Backing Vocals.
Tre Cool - Drums.
Greenday formed in the late 1980's, Inspired by some of the best underground American pop punk artists ... ...were origanally signed to the Underground label LOOKOUT RECORDS home of some very good unknown acts.
Before this album they released a short 10 track album called 39/smooth (Later rereleased with added Eps and bonus tracks as 1039/Smoothed out slappy hours) This was a very good album and showed a lot of promise although the production was a bit poor.
Then came this album...
Most people talk about Dookie whenever they here of Greenday, But that ...

Advantages: great album, written by great band Disadvantages: Too few people own it!
This is green days 1991 album, when they were still signed to lookout records. This album contains some brilliant original tracks, and some very good covers, such as a version of 'My generation' by The Who. The song on the album that everyone will know is 'Welcome to paradise'. The rest of the songs are some-what unknown by most people.
'2000 light years away' with its depressing lyrics but catcy tune starts off this great album. 'No one Knows' ... ...it is such a great tune that I cant stop listening to it.
'Christie road" is another great song, which deserves to be put on repeat all day. 'Dominated love slave' is a humerous intermission, written by Tre! The album sleve is ingenious, with a great story in the middle written by a fan. This is a rarely seen and geard album by a great band. I simply love this album, and most of the songs on it. ...

Advantages: Some strong music has here been created, the talent of Green Day is highly apparent. Disadvantages: The production is poor, this therefore may put some listeners off.
GreenDay is an American rock band that has been active now since 1987. The bands debut release came in 1990 in the form of '39/Smooth', 'Kerplunk' was the bands difficult second album and emerged in the January of 1992. Released through Lookout Records, this album is a far cry from the finely produced GreenDay music of today; the recording is tinny and it's almost like listening to an entirely different band. Sixteen tracks are included here, the album runs for a total of 42 minutes and comes to its close with a cover of the classic 'My Generation' which was of course originally written by Pete Townshend and recorded by The Who for the bands first album of 'My Generation'.
An interesting inclusion on this 'Kerplunk' album is that of the early recording of 'Welcome to Paradise' which later went on to feature on GreenDay ...
Advantages: cheap, cheerfull, bouncy, punk rock with loads of quality tracks Disadvantages: Tre Cool isn't in the band on this CD
If your a GreenDay fan and you don't own this...be very ashamed!
This is GreenDay's first compilation album, as it is actually made up of their first 3 EP's (their first real album being 'Kerplunk'). The EP's in question are called '39 Smooth', '1000 Hours' and 'Slappy' which is why the compilation is called 1039 smoothed out slappy hours.
Basically this is a CD full of songs about teenage love, heartbreak, getting drunk, having sex and generally doing what you are not supposed to...but without the soppy, whingey EMO characteristics of todays bands! In other words, bouncy melodic proper punk pop classics with a little bit of attitude and humour thrown in. In my opinion, This (along with Kerplunk) really are GreenDay at their best. If you dont own it...buy it now! ...
Advantages: Unique among their albums so far Disadvantages: none
This is a long awaited return to the brilliance last seen on 'nimrod'.
'American Idiot' musically could have come from any GreenDay album since 'Kerplunk', however lyrically it is a step-up and a shift into a political outlook.
'Holiday' is another politically minded track that features a simple riff that could have come of off a track from 'Warning'.
'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming' are the masterpieces off of this album. both are over 9 mins long, and feature many different styles of guitar, and drums - these two songs alone make the album worth buying.
'Wake me up When September Ends' is a ballad that almost compares to the great 'Good Ridance (Time of Your Life)' and deserves more credit than it has been given in a lot of reviews.
The other tracks including 'Extrodinary Girl', are all brilliant and this ...
Green Day: Billy Joe (guitar, vocals); Mike (bass); Tre Cool (drums). Additional personnel: Al Sobrante (drums). Recorded at Art Of Ears Studio, San Francisco, California in May and September 1991. All lyrics written by Billie Joe except "Dominated Love Slave" (Tre) and "My Generation" (The Who).
